Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Whesley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexander Karelin!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Sergei Dronov and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Karelin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Whesley manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Karelin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Karelin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Whesley has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Karelin has managed to get both his arms back between Whesley's legs - danger averted.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Whesley throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

Whesley escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Karelin gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Karelin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Karelin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Karelin is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.

Whesley throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

Whesley looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Karelin drops back looking for a leg! Whesley is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Whesley manages to kick Karelin off! Karelin jumps back into Whesley's guard.
Whesley throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Whesley looking for a guillotine here but Karelin defends easily.
Whesley is breathing heavily.

Karelin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Karelin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Karelin drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Karelin seems to have locked his on tight now - Whesley screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Karelin, as he picks up the win!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:01 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). Alexander Karelin!
