1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jun Akiyama! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Shimada.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Helterbrand lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Helterbrand throws a right and a left that Akiyama avoids nicely. No joy there for Helterbrand, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Akiyama slips a jab and a cross from Helterbrand.

Akiyama looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Helterbrand throws a right hand that Akiyama ducks under and follows up with a left that Akiyama also avoids with ease. Helterbrand misses with a double jab.

He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Akiyama was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure! Akiyama is in the full mount, landing strikes. Akiyama looking to control and managing it successfully. Akiyama has hold of Helterbrand's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Helterbrand manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
That's one minute gone in the round. Akiyama raining down hammerfists from mount. Akiyama landing strikes from the mount and Helterbrand is in trouble! Akiyama raining down shots from the mount! Akiyama lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Akiyama looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.

Akiyama working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Akiyama controlling the position easily from mount.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Helterbrand taking shots to the head. Akiyama in mount throwing good strikes here, bouncing his opponent's head off the canvas.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Helterbrand takes a big shot to the head but keeps on trying to improve his position. Helterbrand on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Helterbrand tries to get out of the position. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. A nice elbow there by Akiyama. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Akiyama controlling his opponent. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Helterbrand gets caught flat footed, as Akiyama shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Akiyama looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Akiyama missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Akiyama loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Jun Akiyama has got the better of the ground game so far. Akiyama sitting in guard here, content to control. Akiyama decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Helterbrand, up you get!
That's one minute gone in the round. Akiyama closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. Akiyama has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Akiyama decides to stand back up. Akiyama shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Helterbrand's guard. Akiyama showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Akiyama stands up and waves to Helterbrand to follow him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Akiyama shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Still in half guard, Akiyama seems content to control. Helterbrand keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Akiyama not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Akiyama is trying to work for a kimura but Helterbrand is defending well.
Akiyama controlling the pace. Akiyama has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Helterbrand defend it? Akiyama steps over the head and cranks it - Helterbrand is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Akiyama!
