PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jeff Monson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rodrigo Patino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeff Monson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rodrigo Patino!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Daniel Franklin and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Monson stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Monson wants it to stay on the feet.
Patino throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Monson's waist but Monson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Patino off to one side.
Patino looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Jeff Monson has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rodrigo Patino.

Patino drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Monson tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Patino remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Patino tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Patino has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Patino goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Monson has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Patino but great work by Monson.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Monson is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Patino has managed to free his arm - good work.
Patino wants to control but Monson is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Monson is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Patino has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Monson is working away from the top position though.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Patino seems keen to control Monson's posture.

Monson displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Patino.

Monson closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Patino quickly recovers to half guard.

Patino wants to sweep here but Monson controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Monson postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Patino is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Monson, into his guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Patino is trying to control. Monson wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Patino is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Patino is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Monson defends it well.

Patino looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.

Patino wants to finish this one by submission but Monson is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Patino.

Patino is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Monson is surviving well by controlling Patino's body position as best he can.

Patino has control of Monson's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Monson regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Patino can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Monson is looking to escape.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rodrigo Patino showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Monson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Patino throws some shoulder strikes here and then postures up. Oh, he's gone for an armbar! Monson has his hands clasped together but Patino breaks the hold and Monson is forced to tap! This one is aaaaaaaaaaall over! That was lightning fast by Patino!
