Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Victor Novikov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Matt Hughs! The judges for this bout are Aleksei Zolotukhin, Igor Prikhodko and Fedor Mirinova.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Novikov closes the distance and lands a one-two. Novikov fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Novikov lands a nice shot that snaps Hughs's head back.
Hughs takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. A punch combination from Novikov misses. A combination from Novikov does no damage. Novikov feints a jab promting Hughs to slip. Novikov then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Hughs slips again and ducks right into an uppercut. Nice straight punches there by Novikov. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Novikov. Novikov throws a nice looking combination but Hughs bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Novikov tries to close the distance and clinch but Hughs swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Novikov instigates a clinch. Novikov prevents the takedown attempt.
Hughs is working for takedown but Novikov is calmly controlling the position for now. Novikov stops a takedown attempt from Hughs.
Victor Novikov has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Matt Hughs. Hughs works for the underhooks and manages to get a trip takedown into guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hughs throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Novikov works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Hughs trying to control but Novikov is working from the bottom. Hughs passes Novikov's left leg - he's now in half guard. Novikov blocking the ground and pound attempt from Hughs. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hughs is trying to control the action in half guard but Novikov is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Hughs wants to pass the guard but Novikov is defending well. Novikov is staying active underneath Hughs, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Novikov is in trouble now - Hughs has advanced to mount! Novikov keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Novikov is breathing heavily. Hughs cracks Novikov with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
This has been an exciting period of action! Hughs trying to control but he's not successful this time. Hughs lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.

Novikov is rocked! As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Hughs loads up on a couple of big shots to the head that have Novikov scrambling to escape. He can't get free though and several more unanswered shots from Hughs land to the head. The referee has no choice but to stop the fight. Hughs stands and salutes the crowd.
