PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Charles Darwin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cory Steel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Steel is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Immortal Technique-Point of no return. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Charles Darwin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Cory Steel!
The judges for this bout are George Francis, Tiny Johnson and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Darwin stuffs the takedown.
Steel throws out a loose jab but Darwin uses good head movement to avoid it.
Cory Steel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Steel rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

so Darwin counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Steel manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Darwin manages to get himself to full guard.
Steel trying to control but Darwin is working from the bottom.

Steel drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Darwin manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Steel has Darwin in his guard.
Darwin will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Steel tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Darwin sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Steel's guard.
Darwin is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Darwin is working hard here to advance position.
Steel seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Steel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Cory Steel.

Darwin throws a lazy right hand but Steel sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

Steel's jab looks to have found its range, popping Darwin under the eye.

Darwin lands a really nice looking cross but Steel seems unphased.

and Darwin counters with a left and a right that stings Steel.

Steel misses with a takedown attempt - Darwin sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Darwin fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.

Steel shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Darwin pinned against the cage. Darwin gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Charles Darwin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cory Steel.

Steel is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.
Darwin looks to land a left hand but Steel moved out of range nicely.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Steel jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Cory Steel is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
No joy there for Steel, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Steel throws a jab but it's blocked by Darwin.
Darwin shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Steel as he avoids it easily.

No luck with that takedown attempt from Steel.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Darwin throws a shot from downtown. Steel moves away and avoids it.

Steel shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Darwin counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Steel thinking.
Charles Darwin has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cory Steel.
Steel misses with a body punch
and Darwin counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Darwin uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Steel has time to react.
Darwin moves away from the strike by Steel.
Steel shoots in but no luck this time.
Darwin fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Darwin throws a jab when Steel was well out of range.
Darwin jabs Steel to the body, keeping him at a distance.

and Darwin counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Darwin wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving.
Darwin won't allow Steel to get back to his feet.
Steel is breathing heavily.

Darwin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Steel has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Darwin has managed to get both his arms back between Steel's legs - danger averted.
Darwin wants to control from the top but Steel keeps moving.
Darwin pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Steel is keeping the position for now.

Steel is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Steel manages to escape and get back to his feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Steel is defended easily by Darwin.
Steel throws a combination that misses
and Darwin counters with a stiff right hand.
Darwin slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Steel has a takedown stuffed.

Darwin shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Steel manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Darwin slips nicely into half guard.
Steel pushes Darwin off but Darwin dives into side control.

Steel tries to bench press Darwin off him but Darwin keeps the position.
Steel is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Darwin off and has taken his back!

That's time! Darwin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Steel is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Darwin has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Steel throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Charles Darwin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Steel controlling from mount.
Steel lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Steel is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Darwin to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Darwin shrugs it off.

Steel moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Darwin has worked his arm free - good work by Darwin!
Steel is looking to take a break and control but Darwin is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Cory Steel has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Well Darwin has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
