PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Jack Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Marius Mauler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mauler has chosen WAR then PEACE as his entrance music. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mauler throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
No joy there for Johnson, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Johnson gets caught flat footed, as Mauler shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Mauler looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Mauler must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Johnson wants to sweep but no luck.

Mauler seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Marius Mauler hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Mauler fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Johnson manages to avoid it.

and Johnson counters with a series of strikes. Mauler will be more careful next time no doubt.

Johnson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Johnson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Marius Mauler wasn't active enough on the ground.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

and Mauler counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Mauler.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Johnson passes Mauler's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Johnson is stalling here. Mauler is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Johnson seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Mauler has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Johnson is looking to reverse the position.
Mauler sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Johnson is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Marius Mauler showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Johnson tries to bum rush Mauler with a series of wild strikes but Mauler uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Mauler counters with a nice double leg into side control. Johnson won't be happy with that.
Johnson manages to work his way to half guard, despite Mauler's best efforts.
Johnson is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Mauler seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mauler is nestled in close to Johnson, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
