PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Spenser May (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Aaron Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Spenser May!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Roberts and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith keeps the fight on the outside.
Smith avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
May tries a head kick but it misses.
Smith closes this distance looking for a takedown but May circles away.
May swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
May misses with a head kick.

Smith drives through with a takedown into guard.
May looking to control.
May is looking to stand up but Smith isn't so interested in that idea.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but May is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Smith prevents May from getting back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

May is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Smith dives into side control.
Smith wants to control but May is keeping him busy.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but May shows good takedown defense.
May looks to land a combination but Smith avoids it well.
May stuffs the takedown.

May really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

May's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Aaron Smith just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
May throws a head kick but Smith moves out of range.

May tries to hold on but Smith pushes him away.

Aaron Smith dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


May tries to close the distance and clinch but Smith swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Smith looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Smith blocks a head kick by May.

A combination from May does no damage.
Smith shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has May pinned against the cage. May gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Smith shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with May but May pushes him off and we're back to square one.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
May has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Spenser May seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Smith has hold of May's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and May manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

May would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
May wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

Smith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
May wants to stand and escape but instead Smith has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

May is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Smith stops May from standing up.

May is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
May misses with a double jab.
May throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Smith counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Smith.

May wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Smith manages to pass to side control.

May is trying to stand up here but Smith is controlling him well.
Smith has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Smith takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.
May is trying to get back to his feet but he's not managed it yet.

I really don't envy May right now.
And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Smith's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


May fails to land with a series of punches.
Smith avoids a punch combination nicely.
May throws a head kick that misses

and Smith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in May's guard.

You can see the frustration on May's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Aaron Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

May is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Smith asserts his dominance and retains side control.
The referee asks Smith politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Smith prefers to stall for the moment though.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

May rushes Smith and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
A short right from May on the inside.
May using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Smith has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Smith pulls guard.

May decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smith, up you get!

Smith tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
The referee calls for May to work.

Smith tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. May just stands there and leans against the cage.

and Smith counters with a takedown into side control.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Smith advances to mount.
May really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
A nice elbow there by Smith.
Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Smith wants to control the pace but May is squirming around nicely.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
May tries to improve his position but instead Smith has taken his back!
Spenser May has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
May is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Aaron Smith.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Smith, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
