The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith looks for a takedown but Kay sprawls well. Kay pushes Smith up against the cage in a clinch. Kay lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
It looks like Aaron Smith has been cut. Kay breaks from the clinch.
Kay bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Smith's head backwards. Kay tries to close the distance and clinch but Smith swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Kay swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Smith counters with a one-two to the body. Kay dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Kay misses with a wild body shot. Kay gets a clinch. Kay escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Kay tries to clinch but Smith moves out of range. Smith shoots in looking for a takedown but Kay manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Smith's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Smith doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body. Kay stuffs the takedown attempt from Smith. Smith gets slowly back to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aaron Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him. Smith shoots in and bounces Kay off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Kay manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Smith manages to get himself to full guard.

Smith drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kay looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kay looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kay! You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Kay remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kay is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Smith misses with a head shot. Kay uses the momentum to regain guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kay has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Smith off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds. Kay gets in close and instigates a clinch. Kay lands a body shot in the clinch.
This has been an exciting period of action! Smith drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Kay gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Smith.
