Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Werner Arber! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Greg Valentine! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Steve Montenegro and Joseph Jones.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Arber misses with a looping right. Arber misses with a looping right. Werner Arber seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Arber does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Valentine slips under a jab from Arber. Arber throws a leg kick but Valentine checks it. Valentine forces Arber back against the cage and clinches. Valentine changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Arber fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Valentine defending well as Arber loads up on a big left hand. Valentine moves into the clinch. Valentine is stalling here.
Arber keeps control of Valentine as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Arber pulls guard. Valentine postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Arber is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Arber really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
That's one minute gone in the round. Arber wants to sweep here but Valentine controlling him for the moment. Arber preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Arber wants to sweep but no luck.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Arber throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Valentine sees it coming and avoids it easily. Valentine shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Arber pinned against the cage. Arber gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Valentine gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Valentine takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Werner Arber has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Greg Valentine. Arber throws an overhand right that lands on Valentine's shoulder, as Valentine tries to avoid the shot. Valentine attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin. Valentine moves out of range as Arber strikes. Valentine looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Arber! Valentine unloads with some shots from mount but Arber bucks and avoids them well.
Valentine really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Arber. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Arber blocking the ground and pound. Arber is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Valentine trying to control but Arber is having none of it. Arber is trying desperately to improve position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Valentine scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Arber tries to improve his position but instead Valentine has taken his back! Valentine throwing lazy shots from the back mount that aren't doing any damage. Valentine doesn't have the hooks in and Arber manages to turn into his guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Arber tries to free his leg and advance position but Valentine is retaining full guard. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Arber accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Arber will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Arber working some strikes from top position. Arber trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Valentine is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Arber trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Arber throwing strikes but missing. Valentine looking to control.
Arber distracts Valentine with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. Valentine tries to strike from the bottom.
Arber wants to control from the top but Valentine keeps moving. Valentine is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Arber is aware though and is defending well. Arber drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Arber jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Arber's corner. There ya go! There ya go! The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Arber loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Valentine working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Arber doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Arber manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Valentine looks gassed! Valentine utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close round but Greg Valentine will probably get the nod. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Arber fails to land with a series of punches.
Arber thows a left - swing and a miss! Valentine moves away from the strike by Arber. Valentine keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Arber. Valentine staying out of range there. Horrible takedown by Valentine or perhaps it was just good defense by Arber which made him look bad. Arber closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Valentine to the mat! Valentine manages to get full guard. Valentine has momentary wrist control but Arber slips an elbow through the middle. Arber tries to free his leg and advance position but Valentine is retaining full guard. Arber keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Valentine's head. Arber passes into half guard. Valentine wants to control but Arber is keeping busy.

That's one minute gone in the round. Valentine looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Arber is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Arber seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Arber lands strikes from half guard. Valentine is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Arber pulls his head out easily. Arber wants to lay and pray for a moment but Valentine keeps working. Arber works his way into side control. A control attempt from Valentine but he's now mounted!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Arber prevents Valentine from getting the reversal. Arber raining down hammerfists from mount. Arber with the ground and pound from mount. Arber has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Arber lands a big elbow. Arber is in the full mount, landing strikes. Valentine is breathing heavily. Valentine tries to hold on but Arber pushes him away. Arber working away from the top, dropping strikes. Arber has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Valentine's face.
Valentine is rocked! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Arber is giving the impression that he's looking to ground and pound but he switches suddenly into a beautiful far side armbar! Valentine is forced to tap! Great finish!
