Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Outair Gaist! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris Punch! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Robert Twigg and George Francis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Punch throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gaist's waist but Gaist gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Punch off to one side. Punch throws a left and a right that both miss
and Gaist counters with a nice uppercut. Punch shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Gaist circles away from the clinch attempt letting Gaist counter with a right hand. Punch throws a combination that misses and Gaist counters with a nice uppercut. Punch throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gaist's waist but Gaist gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Punch off to one side. Outair Gaist has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Punch. Punch cracks Gaist with a good jab.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gaist throws a shot to the body.
Gaist with a jab. Punch drives through with a takedown into guard. Gaist is trying to control the position but Punch postures up. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Gaist wants to stand and escape but Punch is having none of it. Gaist knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Punch on the ground. Punch sitting in guard, not really doing much. Gaist on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Gaist tries to get out of the position. Punch pushing down on Gaist's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Punch is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Punch missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Punch perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Gaist wants to get back to his feet. Punch trying to pass the guard but Gaist defending well.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. No luck for Punch with that takedown attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Punch throws a left and a right that both miss
and Gaist counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Punch changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gaist looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Gaist is letting Punch control him for a moment. Punch throws an elbow but Gaist slips to the side and avoids it well. Punch is trying to get an arm triangle but Gaist is defending well. Gaist tries to get back to half guard but can't.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Punch working the ground and pound but Gaist is defending the strikes. Gaist is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Punch asserts his dominance and retains side control. Punch has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Gaist! Punch controlling from the full mount. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Punch cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Chris Punch dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Punch shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Gaist as he jumps to the side.
It looks like Outair Gaist has been cut. Jab, jab by Gaist - just one landing. Gaist moves into range and connects with a jab. Punch fails with a takedown attempt. A left lands for Gaist. Punch shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Gaist but Gaist pushes him off and we're back to square one. Outair Gaist has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Punch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Punch shoots in looking for a takedown but Gaist manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Punch's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. No luck for Punch with that takedown attempt. Punch shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Punch closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Punch lands in his opponent's guard. Punch has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Punch trying to control but Gaist is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Punch throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Punch in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Punch with a flurry of punches that miss. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Punch accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Gaist avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Punch pushing down on Gaist's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Gaist keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Punch throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Punch seems to be working for a kimura but Gaist defends the submission attempt. Punch is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Punch thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Well, if Punch is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Gaist is trying to maintain the position but Punch is very close to passing his half guard. Gaist is trying to stand back up but Punch is controlling him
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Punch fails with a takedown attempt. Punch tries for a takedown but Gaist sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Outair Gaist will probably get the nod. The cut man is working on Outair Gaist's cut. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.
Punch throws a chopping leg kick but Gaist manages to avoid taking any serious damage. Excellent takedown into side control there by Punch. Gaist tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Punch wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. You can see the frustration on Gaist's face as Punch controls the position. Gaist tries to contro but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad. Punch tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Gaist is trying to stand up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Punch has hold of Gaist's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Gaist manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
A nice elbow there by Punch. Punch controlling the pace for now. Chris Punch has got the better of the ground game so far. Gaist is bucking up trying to escape but Punch cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Outair Gaist's cut is getting worse.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Punch landing punches.
Outair Gaist's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it. Punch controlling from the full mount. Punch with good strikes from the mount here!
Jeez, Outair Gaist's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Outair Gaist's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
