Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cain Velasquez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jason Shields! The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Chad Campbell and Russell Pearce.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Velasquez misses with a takedown attempt letting Shields counter with a right hand. Velasquez throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Velasquez doesn't succeed with the takedown and Shields counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Velasquez tries to clinch but fails miserably and Shields counters with a stiff right hand. Shields tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Velasquez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Shields scores with a takedown into Velasquez's guard. Velasquez avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Velasquez looking to control.
Velasquez can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Shields controls the pace. Shields's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Shields distracts Velasquez with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Velasquez looking to control.
Shields sitting in guard, not really doing much. Shields has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Jason Shields has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. A momentary lapse in concentration from Velasquez enables Shields to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Velasquez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Shields's corner is telling him to maintain position. Velasquez could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Shields decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. Velasquez misses with a takedown and Shields counters with a nice double leg into half guard. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cain Velasquez. That's going to take a lot out of him. Velasquez is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shields is controlling the pace.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jason Shields wasn't active enough on the ground. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Shields.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Shields instigates a clinch. Shields successfully pulls guard.
Shields is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Velasquez trying to control but Shields is working from the bottom. Shields looking for a sweep. Not yet Shields, not yet. Shields looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Velasquez wanted to stand there but Shields had control of the position. Shields is pulling down on Velasquez's head. It's preventing any offense from Velasquez, at least for the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Shields keeping moving, preventing Velasquez from controlling successfully. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Shields has control of Velasquez's left arm, preventing Velasquez from doing any damage.
Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Shields drives through and clinches with Velasquez against the cage.
Shields wants the takedown. Velasquez is fighting it off but Shields persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Velasquez's guard against the cage. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Shields is stalling in the full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jason Shields dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Shields looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Shields performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Shields seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Velasquez is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
