PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between John Colon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Rice (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Colon!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Rice!
The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Stewart Dunkirk and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rice throws a wild body kick that Colon sees coming a mile off.
Colon misses with a few strikes there.

Colon closes the distance and clinches.
Rice misses with a hook from the clinch.
Colon tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Rice avoids it.
Rice working aggressively here.
Rice misses with an elbow strike.
Rice throws an elbow but it's blocked.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Colon blocks an uppercut.
Rice swings wildly with an uppercut but Colon uses good head movement to avoid it.
Rice scores with a shoulder strike.
Colon is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Rice gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Rice breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Rice checks the leg kick nicely there.
Colon doesn't manage to clinch there - Rice circles away.
Rice throws a head kick that misses.
Colon shoots in for a takedown but Rice shows good takedown defense.
Colon will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Rice pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Rice misses with a head kick.
Colon tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Rice counters with a one-two to the body.
Colon misses with a takedown attempt - Rice sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Colon. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Colon shoots in for a double leg but Rice sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Colon throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Rice's waist but Rice gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Colon off to one side.
Rice lands an overhand right.
A big left from Rice misses.
Rice throws a right and a left that both miss.
Rice tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Colon closes this distance looking for a takedown but Rice circles away.
Rice pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Colon will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Colon gets tackled into the cage by Rice. Rice maintains the clinch.
Rice works on Colon's body with a couple of short punches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Rice stalling the fight.

Rice breaks from the clinch.
Rice checks a leg kick nicely.
Rice plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Rice stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Rice wants it to stay on the feet.
Colon tries to clinch

and Rice moves into the clinch.
Rice is working Colon over against the cage.
Colon is breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Rice utilising his Muay Thai to score with a knee to the body.
A short body shot lands from Rice as the two fighters clinch.
Rice tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Rice slowing the pace effectively.
Rice lands a shot to the body.
Rice lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.

Rice's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Rice misses with a head kick.
Colon showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Rice.
Rice pulls out of a head kick attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Rice misses with a combination

so Colon counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Rice wants to stand but Colon is controlling the position.
Rice is wriggling around but Colon manages to pass to half guard.
Rice blocking the ground and pound attempt from Colon.
Rice avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Colon.
Colon stops Rice from getting back to his feet.
Colon missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Colon is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Rice is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:03 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). John Colon!
