The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ribeiro shoots in and drives through. Arona sprawls well. Ribeiro is trying hard to land a takedown here. Arona sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Arona stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Arona wants it to stay on the feet. Jon Arona has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcelo Ribeiro. Arona throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Ribeiro fails with the takedown and Arona counters with a crisp one two that drops Ribeiro! Arona thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Ribeiro to his feet! Ribeiro is in big trouble! Ribeiro shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Ribeiro postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Arona has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Ribeiro is looking to work some ground and pound but Arona has wrist control. Arona working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Ribeiro. Ribeiro throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
That's one minute gone in the round. Arona preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Ribeiro has gone for a leg lock! Arona slips out almost immediately though and dives into Ribeiro's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Arona trying to control but Ribeiro is working from the bottom. Arona avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Ribeiro can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Arona controls the pace. Ribeiro can't keep his opponent in guard - Arona advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Arona stalling. Ribeiro won't allow Arona to pass to mount.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Arona is keen to just control but Ribeiro is a slippery customer. Arona seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Ribeiro is refusing to be controlled, as Arona sits in half guard.
We're going to have a standup here because Jon Arona wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Ribeiro changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Arona looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Ribeiro postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Ribeiro tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Arona tries to improve position but can't. Ribeiro creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Arona sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Arona manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Arona passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Ribeiro! Ribeiro tries to lock up and control but Arona gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Ribeiro gets back to half guard. Arona is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Arona is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ribeiro looking for submissions off his back. Arona wants to pass to mount but Ribeiro is defending the position. Ribeiro looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Arona wants to control but Ribeiro is keeping him busy. Ribeiro trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Arona manages to pass to mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jon Arona dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Ribeiro shoots and misses and Arona counters with a straight right hand. Arona connects with a body shot. Arona digs a good hook to Ribeiro's body.
Jab, jab by Arona - just one landing. Arona misses with a straight right. Jab by Arona. Arona uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. Ribeiro is breathing heavily. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! A swing and a miss from Arona. Ribeiro moves out of range as Arona strikes. Arona ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Arona lands with a shot to the body. Arona scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Ribeiro doesn't seem bothered though. Arona lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Marcelo Ribeiro seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Arona throws a big shot that misses. Arona lunges at Ribeiro with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Ribeiro's hand.
Ribeiro is rocked! The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Arona lands a lovely overhand right. Ribeiro is still on wobbly legs! Can Arona finish him? Arona drops Ribeiro with a straight right hand, right on the button! Arona follows him down to the mat and pounds him out with hammerfists until the referee jumps in to end the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jon Arona!
