PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Larry Grant (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Taiei Kin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Grant comes into the arena with Diesel Power blaring out of the sound system. The crowd seem to be enjoying Kin's choice of entrance music: Condemned 84 - Face the Aggression . The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Larry Grant!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Taiei Kin!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Marco Blurström and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kin rushes Grant and presses him up against the cage.
A right hook to the body lands for Grant.
Kin misses with a knee strike.

Kin has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Grant uses from the top position.
Grant has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Kin is proving hard to escape from.
Kin wants to stand up but Grant is controlling him.
Grant wants to stand but Kin has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Kin wants to get back to his feet but Grant is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Grant has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Kin has Grant pressed against the cage, preventing Grant from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Grant breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Grant scores with a one two! Kin had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes.


It looks like Taiei Kin has been cut.
Grant scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Larry Grant is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Grant lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Grant moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Grant moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.

Grant lands a nice shot to the body.
Grant shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Kin eats them both and turns towards Grant to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Kin walks into a left hand.
Grant cracks Kin with a right hand to the side of the head.

Kin drives through and clinches with Grant against the cage.
Kin misses with a knee strike.
Kin misses with a knee strike.
Grant is trying to break the clinch but Kin is controlling him.
Grant takes an elbow to the forehead.

Grant is fighting off a takedown attempt but Kin is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Grant to the mat. Grant regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kin wants to stand but Grant is controlling his posture from full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Grant is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kin is controlling him.
Kin would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Kin clinches up against the cage.
Kin tries a knee to the head but Grant blocks it.
Kin misses with an elbow strike.
Kin looking to throw knees to the head but Grant is blocking nicely.
A right handed body shot lands from Grant.
Grant working hard to break the clinch.
Kin putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Grant in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body.
Kin pushes off an throws an elbow but Grant leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Grant takes an elbow to the temple.
A right hand to the body from Grant.
Grant is trying to break free.

Kin has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Grant regains guard immediately.
Kin wants to get up but he can't break Grant's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Larry Grant dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Taiei Kin's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Grant connects with a body shot.

Kin forces Grant back against the cage and clinches.
Grant is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Grant has had enough of the clinch but Kin keeps him there for the moment.

Kin tightens his grip and picks Grant up, before dumping him to the ground. Grant manages to land in guard.
Grant knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Kin on the ground.
Kin would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Kin is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Kin clinches with his opponent.
Kin misses with a knee to the head.
Grant avoiding damage as Kin throws knees to the body.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Kin tries to land a knee to the head but misses.
Grant is looking to break free of the clinch but Kin has double underhooks.
Kin landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.

Kin has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Grant regains guard immediately.
Kin stops Grant from standing up.
Kin has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Grant is proving hard to escape from.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kin drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Grant is trying to escape and get back to his feet.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taiei Kin showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

Grant takes an elbow to the forehead.
A frustrated look appears on Grant's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Kin tries to land knees in the clinch but Grant avoids the damage to the body.
Kin throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Grant blocks it with crossed arms.
Grant lands an uppercut.

Kin is trying to trip Grant. He has hold of a leg but Grant is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Kin persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Kin wants to stand but Grant is controlling his posture from full guard.
Grant will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Grant fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.

Kin takes the fight into the clinch.

Kin misses the knee to the body. Nice hip positioning from Grant.

Kin throws an elbow that misses.
Kin creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Kin gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.
Kin using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Grant has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Grant is working Kin over against the cage.
Grant is trying to break the clinch but Kin is controlling him.
Kin misses with a knee strike.

Grant breaks from the clinch.
Kin takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Kin clinches.
Grant managing to block the knees to the body from Kin.

Grant tries to circle away but Kin has him pinned against the cage.

Kin gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Kin is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Grant looks like he's trying to stand up.
Kin wants to stand up but Grant has a hold of him and won't allow it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Taiei Kin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
