Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Brad Rood (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Shane Richards (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rood comes to the cage accompanied by Enter Sandman, by Metallica. Richards is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Cry me a river - Michael buble. On his way into the cage it seems that Brad Rood has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Brad Rood seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brad Rood! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Shane Richards! The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Kavanagh and David Schapiro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Richards misses with a low kick.
Richards throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Rood fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Richards sprawls well initially but Rood persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Richards tries to roll over but Rood keeps him under control. Ground and pound from Rood. Rood prevents Richards from improving his position. Rood trying to mount his opponent but Richards defends it. Rood looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Richards is refusing to be controlled, as Rood sits in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Richards is looking to escape. Richards won't allow Rood to pass to mount. Rood is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. Rood is thwarting Richards's attempts to control the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Richards keeping hold of Rood's head, controlling as best he can. Rood has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Richards is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Rood is working for a submission of some sort.

Richards manages to escape and get back to his feet! Brad Rood seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Richards gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Rood. Richards stuffs the takedown. Rood dodges the punch combination from Richards.

Rood shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Richards is trying to defend but Rood finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Richards tries to kick Rood off but Rood keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Rood is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Richards defends it well. Richards wants to control but Rood passes into side.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Rood. Rood throwing shots but missing, from side control. Richards is trying to get back to his feet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rood cracks Richards with a big elbow. Rood wants to lay and pray for a moment but Richards keeps working. Rood wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Richards, who protects the arm well. Richards takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Richards tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Rood wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Rood works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rood is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Richards is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Rood has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Richards! Richards is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Richards tries to hold on but Rood postures up. Rood goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Richards is on top in guard.
Richards stands up from Rood's guard - Richards perhaps looking for a knockout. Rood takes a swing at Richards's ribcage but misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nice cross by Rood. Rood ducks under a wild hook from Richards. Rood moves out of range of the strikes. Rood throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Richards counters with a leg kick. A low kick from Rood misses and Richards makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick. Richards tried to score with a low kick but Rood checks it. Richards checks a leg kick nicely. Richards feints a jab promting Rood to slip. Richards then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Rood slips again and ducks right into an uppercut. Richards tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Richards misses with a double jab
and Rood counters with a nice double leg into side control. Richards won't be happy with that.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Rood working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Rood looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Check out the look on Rood's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!

Rood tries to advance to mount but can't. Rood throws an elbow but Richards slips to the side and avoids it well. Rood lands a decent elbow from side control. Richards is trying to escape and get back to his feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Richards is looking to regain half guard here but Rood keeps moving and retains side control. Richards really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Rood. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Both fighters take a look at the clock. Rood trying to control the action but Richards is working from the bottom. You can see the frustration on Richards's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Rood is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Richards knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Richards looking for a sweep but Rood has passed into full mount! Oh no! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rood jabs at Richards's body. Richards fails to land with a series of punches.

and Richards counters with a thumping low kick. Rood thuds his right hand into Richards's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Richards slaps away a takedown attempt from Rood, before circling back to the center of the mat. Rood scores with a hook. A jab from Rood finds it's way through Richards's defenses. Richards throws a leg kick but Rood sees it coming and checks it nicely. Richards swinging wildly here.

Richards throws out a leg kick but Rood moves out of range and Richards only half commits. Richards uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Rood. Rood thows a body shot but no joy. A low kick from Rood is predictable there and Richards counters with a leg kick. Shane Richards is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Rood misses with a low kick. Rood misses with a double jab
enabling Richards to counter with a crisp jab. Rood will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Richards defends it well. Rood seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move.
