PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Babsie Paneda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jon Jones told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Babsie Paneda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Jon Jones!
The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Steven Brown and Andrew Berry.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones throws a combination that misses
and Paneda counters with a straight right hand.

Paneda throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Jones was covering up waiting for the punch and Paneda finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Paneda trying to control the position from guard on top but Jones is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Jones looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Babsie Paneda.
Jones misses with a double jab

and Paneda decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Jones's guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Jones has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Paneda off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Paneda walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush.
Jon Jones is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Paneda shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Jones is trying to defend but Paneda finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Paneda is looking to take a break and control but Jones is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Paneda wants to stand but Jones has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Jones is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Paneda is staying active.

Jones is looking to regain half guard here but Paneda keeps moving and retains side control.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Jones is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Paneda off and has taken his back!

Jones has decided that he can't make progress quickly enough from the back position and has rather unusually decided to stand up from the dominant position. Obviously he's going to be looking for the knockout on the feet here!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Paneda lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Jones backs up against the cage.
Jones looks to land a right hand but Paneda moved out of range.
Paneda throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Jones's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Jones misses with a hook.
Paneda moves out of range as Jones throws a body kick.
Jones throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
Jones throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Paneda counters with a nice double leg into side control. Jones won't be happy with that.
Jones wants to control but Paneda postures up.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Paneda grinds an elbow into Jones's temple.
Paneda is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Babsie Paneda dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Nice cross by Paneda.
Paneda ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
Paneda could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Jones delivers a nice body kick.
Jones scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Paneda doesn't seem bothered though.
Jones pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Jones misses with a double jab

and Paneda counters with a single leg into guard. Jones didn't expect that.

Paneda stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Jones swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Babsie Paneda overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Paneda is really struggling to control Jones but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

We're going to have a standup here because Babsie Paneda wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Jones throws a head kick that misses.
Paneda blocks a head kick by Jones.

Paneda drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Jones wants to sweep here but Paneda controlling him for the moment.

Paneda might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Paneda prevents Jones from getting back to his feet.
Jones is trying to keep Paneda in close.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jon Jones hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Jones blocks a head kick by Paneda.

Jones throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Paneda counters with a two punch combo.
Paneda will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Jones connects with a leg kick. Paneda looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Paneda lands a leg kick that knocks Jones off balance momentarily.

Paneda decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Jones, up you get!

Paneda tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Jones manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

A head kick from Jones lands but Paneda takes it in his stride.
Jones throws a nice looking combination but Paneda bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

and Paneda counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Paneda engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Jones wants to stand and escape but Paneda is having none of it.
Paneda stopping the sweep attempt from Jones.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Paneda looking to sit in guard and control but Jones gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Paneda tries to clinch but Jones is having none of it.

Jones misses with a head kick.

and Paneda counters with a shoot takedown. Jones fights it but they end up in guard.
Paneda trying to control but Jones is working from the bottom.

Paneda gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Jones swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Paneda counters with a nice double leg into guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Jones has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Paneda can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Jones is working an open guard so Paneda takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Paneda checks the leg kick nicely there.
Jones throws a nice outside leg kick.
Jones fails to land with a series of punches.
Jones swings for the body but Paneda moves out of range.
Paneda swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Jones misses with a lunging right hand

and Paneda moves into the clinch.
Paneda is working for takedown but Jones is calmly controlling the position for now.
Paneda avoiding damage as Jones throws knees to the body.

Jones gets control of Paneda's arms and successfully pulls guard. Jones will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Paneda is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Jones has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Paneda is looking to defend but Jones has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Paneda! Jones pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Paneda taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Jon Jones!
