Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dimas Russo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bryan Vessey! The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Edson Gomes and Luis Engracia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vessey uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Russo.
Vessey tries to clinch up and Russo makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Vessey really felt that one! Vessey on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Russo throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Vessey tries to clinch and Russo holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Russo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Russo shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Vessey napping and manages to drive through into side control! Russo stands up and beckons Vessey to his feet. This has been an exciting period of action! Russo has closed the distance and engaged Vessey in a clinch.
Russo tries to pull guard but Vessey holds him up against the cage and eventually Russo drops back down to his feet.
Russo misses with a knee strike.
Vessey pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage. Russo avoids the elbow strike from Vessey, against the cage.
Vessey stops a takedown attempt from Russo.
Vessey throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
Vessey throws an elbow but it misses.
Russo is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Dimas Russo. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's one minute gone in the round. Russo blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Russo has Vessey pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Russo pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Vessey tumbling to the mat - Russo dives into Vessey's guard. Vessey pulls Russo in close to his closed guard and prevents Russo from doing any damage or advancing position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vessey wants to get back to his feet but Russo is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Russo throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Vessey works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Russo passes easily into side control. Nice work. Russo trying to control the action but Vessey is working from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Russo working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Russo is putting a hurting on Vessey here, landing some big shots from side control. Russo trying to control the position but Vessey is working away. Russo decides to take the fight back to the feet. A nice inside leg kick there by Russo. That's going to slow Vessey down. Vessey tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Russo counters with a good, hard body kick but Vessey shrugs it off. Vessey looks gassed!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Russo misses with a head kick.
Russo throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Vessey is trying hard to land a takedown here. Russo sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Russo has taken the fight to the clinch.
Russo manages to break the clinch.
Bryan Vessey seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Russo looks to land a body kick but Vessey moved away. Russo will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Russo lands a really nice looking cross but Vessey seems unphased.
Russo shoots in but Vessey avoids the takedown attempt easily. Russo misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Vessey shoots in for a double leg but Russo sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Vessey blocks a head kick by Russo.
Russo tries to clinch but fails miserably and Vessey counters by moving into the clinch. Vessey throws an elbow but it misses.
Russo pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Russo shoots in for a takedown but Vessey shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Vessey closes the distance but Russo moves to the side and Russo counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Russo perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Russo passes the guard and advances to mount! Vessey's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. This has been an exciting period of action! Russo working away from the top, dropping strikes.
Vessey is rocked!
It looks like Bryan Vessey has been cut. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Russo drops a big elbow. That's hurt Vessey! More shots from Russo and the ref steps in! The fight is over!
