Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Grant Daniels (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chris Benoit (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Chris Benoit! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Columbo Gatti and Jorge Garcia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Daniels stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Daniels wants it to stay on the feet. Benoit misses with a takedown attempt - Daniels sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Benoit shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Daniels sprawls well. Daniels wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Benoit gets slowly back to his feet. Grant Daniels has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chris Benoit. Benoit looks gassed! Benoit throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Daniels counters with a lovely straight right hand! Daniels shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Daniels showed some decent athleticism there. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Benoit won't allow Daniels to pass to mount. We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Benoit has eaten all the pies! Daniels thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Daniels takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Daniels thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Benoit's head. Daniels is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Daniels lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Benoit is trying to maintain the position but Daniels is very close to passing his half guard. Daniels content to control rather than advance.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Daniels lands with a punch from half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Benoit is looking for a sweep. Daniels is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Daniels drops an elbow to the side of Benoit's head. Benoit is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Benoit looks like he's trying to stand up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Daniels content to control rather than advance. Daniels tries to pass to full mount but Benoit defends it. Benoit is trying to stand.
Benoit is refusing to be controlled, as Daniels sits in half guard. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Grant Daniels. Daniels misses with a takedown attempt - Benoit sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Daniels jumps guard and drags Benoit to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Daniels keeping full guard, as Benoit tries to pass. Benoit trying to control but Daniels is working from the bottom. Daniels will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Benoit is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Benoit trying to stand up but can't free himself from Daniels's guard. Daniels not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Benoit content to stall in guard here.

That was a close round but Grant Daniels did the better work so I'd imagine he'll take it. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Benoit can do anything to dispel that myth.

Benoit pulls Daniels in close to his closed guard and prevents Daniels from doing any damage or advancing position. Daniels won't allow Benoit to sweep him here. Chris Benoit has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Grant Daniels is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Daniels trying to control the position from guard on top but Benoit is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
