PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Sanius Viver (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Francois Pignon (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pignon is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Monster. Both fighters will be looking to make this an exciting fight for the fans, I'm sure!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sanius Viver!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Francois Pignon!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Skip Squint and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Pignon avoids the head kick by Viver.
Viver looks to land a combination but Pignon avoids it well.

Viver feints and as Pignon raises his hands in defense, Viver changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Pignon is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Viver has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Viver wants to control from the top but Pignon keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Pignon with a poor takedown

and Viver counters with a nice double leg into side control. Pignon won't be happy with that.
Viver wants to control but Pignon is keeping him busy.
Pignon tries to improve position but can't.

Viver misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
Viver works a knee to the body and follows up with a nice elbow to the head.

Pignon is trying to control Viver's posture but Viver avoids it.
Pignon is trying to get back to half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Viver missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Viver throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Viver thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pignon's head.
Pignon moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Pignon controls Viver momentarily but Viver frees himself.

Pignon working a defensive guard but Viver manages to pass into side control anyway.
Pignon is trying to improve his position.
Pignon sneaks back into half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Viver lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Pignon has hold of Viver's hands but Viver slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

and Viver counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Pignon trying to keep hold of his opponent's head but Viver manages to pass to mount!
Pignon can't escape the position.
Viver unloads with some shots from mount but Pignon bucks and avoids them well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pignon is trying to escape the mount.

Pignon is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Viver looking to control but Pignon is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Pignon really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Sanius Viver overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Pignon tries to hold on but Viver pushes him away.
Viver throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Pignon regains half guard.
Viver thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

The fighters are battling for position here. Pignon manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
Pignon utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Viver wants to control from the top but Pignon keeps moving.
Pignon looking for a sweep. Not yet Pignon, not yet.
Viver is stalling in the full guard.
Pignon looking to hit a scissor sweep but Viver is one step ahead there.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

We're going to have a standup here because Sanius Viver wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Viver tries for a takedown but Pignon circles away easily

and Pignon counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Pignon drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Viver dives on top into guard.
Viver knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Pignon on the ground.
Viver with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Viver advances to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!


Pignon has his takedown stuffed

and Viver counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Viver postures up in Pignon's guard and throws a big left but Pignon blocks it.
Pignon is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Viver won't allow Pignon to sweep him here.

Pignon had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Viver defends it easily.
Pignon keeping moving, preventing Viver from controlling successfully.

Viver is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Pignon is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Sanius Viver wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Viver looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

so Pignon counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Pignon drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Viver manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Pignon has Viver in his guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Viver accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Viver postures up.
Viver slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Viver is looking to work some ground and pound but Pignon has wrist control.
Sanius Viver is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Viver throws a big right hand that misses.
Pignon controls Viver momentarily but Viver frees himself.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Francois Pignon was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Pignon wants to stand but Viver has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Pignon stands and steps away. Viver gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Pignon ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
Pignon is trying hard to land a takedown here. Viver sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Viver tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Pignon was well out of range. Poor timing from Viver.

and Pignon counters with a shoot takedown. Viver fights it but they end up in guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sanius Viver. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Pignon passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Pignon stands up and we're back to a striking position.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Viver really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Viver throws and elbow that misses. Pignon uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Viver's guard. Nice move by Pignon!

I would just about give that final round to Francois Pignon.
Well Viver has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
