PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Julian Martinez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Serra (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jose Serra told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Julian Martinez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Serra!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Paulo Santos and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martinez closes the distance but Serra moves to the side
and Serra counters with a nice uppercut.

Serra shoots in and gets a takedown into Martinez's guard.
Martinez is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Serra dives into side control.
Martinez tries to bench press Serra off him but Serra keeps the position.
Serra controls the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Martinez is trying to control Serra's posture but Serra avoids it.
Serra happy to just control the position for now.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Martinez is trying to work for a sweep but Serra has mounted him!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Martinez tries to lock up and control but Serra gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Martinez working to try and regain half guard.
Serra controlling the position easily from mount.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Martinez is wriggling around trying to escape.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Serra takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Martinez tries to get back to half guard but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Martinez wants to hold on but Serra pushes him away.
Serra controlling his opponent.
Martinez is breathing heavily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jose Serra dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Serra scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Martinez wants to get back to full guard but Serra has passed into side control.
Martinez tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Serra controlling his opponent.

Martinez wants to hold on but Serra pushes him away.
Martinez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Martinez tries to get out of the position.
Serra looking to control and managing it successfully.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Serra takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jose Serra showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!


Martinez tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Serra counters with a nice double leg into side control. Martinez won't be happy with that.
Martinez tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Serra wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Serra advances to full mount.
Martinez is trying desperately to improve position.
Serra controlling from mount.

Martinez working to try and regain half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Serra sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Let's hope that Serra has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Jose Serra.

Serra looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Serra is controlling the pace.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Serra is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Martinez!
Serra content just to control the position here.

Jose Serra comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Serra has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
