PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rodrigo Reis (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Reis comes to the cage accompanied by Master Of Puppets. The crowd seem to be enjoying Hawk's choice of entrance music: Moskau. I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rodrigo Reis!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mike Hawk!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Chris Downing and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Reis wants to clinch.
Hawk jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Hawk tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Reis manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Reis throws a one two combo.


It looks like Mike Hawk has been cut.
A head kick misses from Reis.
Reis throws a series of punches but Hawk avoids them all with ease.
Reis throws a right and a left that both miss.
Reis slips under a jab from Hawk.
Reis fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Hawk looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Hawk lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.


It looks like Rodrigo Reis has been cut.
Hawk throws a sloppy head kick and Reis moves out of range easily.

Hawk fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Reis, pushing him back against the cage.
Hawk lands a hook to the side of the head.
Hawk tries to pull guard but Reis holds him up against the cage and eventually Hawk drops back down to his feet.

Reis breaks the clinch.

Reis clinches with his opponent.
Hawk has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Reis avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Hawk prevents Reis from breaking the clinch.
Reis is trying to push Hawk away but Hawk has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Hawk jumps into guard, dragging Reis to the mat.
Hawk is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Hawk is trying to control the position but Reis postures up.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Reis trying to stand up but can't free himself from Hawk's guard.
Reis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Mike Hawk.
Hawk throws a hook to the side of Reis's head but Reis sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Hawk tries to clinch up.
Reis throws a series of punches but Hawk avoids them all with ease.

Hawk closes the distance and clinches.
Reis is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Reis wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Hawk lands a nice knee to the body.
Reis tries to work over Hawk's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Hawk lands a nice shot to the body.
Reis tries to break the clinch but Hawk is controlling the position.
Hawk is leaning against Reis and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Hawk is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Reis pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Rodrigo Reis has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Hawk.
Reis is looking to break free of the clinch but Hawk has double underhooks.
Reis is trying to break the clinch but Hawk has him pressed against the cage.
Hawk digs a right hand underneath Reis's ribcage. Reis let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Reis can't break the clinch.
Hawk with a knee to the head.

Hawk pulls guard effortlessly.
Hawk bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Reis's guard.
Reis is breathing heavily.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hawk postures up in Reis's guard and throws a big left but Reis blocks it.
Reis keeping moving, preventing Hawk from controlling successfully.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mike Hawk was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Hawk is looking to clinch but Reis is avoiding it.
Hawk misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Hawk tries to clinch but Reis is having none of it.
Sloppy strikes from Reis. Those never looked like landing.
Hawk throws a head kick but Reis moves out of range.
Hawk tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Mike Hawk seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Reis throws a jab when Hawk was well out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Hawk dominated that round.
Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Hawk tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Reis manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

and Reis counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Hawk tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Hawk throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Reis counters with a stiff right hand.
Good work by Hawk as he checks the leg kick.

Hawk moves in looking to clinch but Reis pushes him off.

Hawk drives through and clinches with Reis against the cage.
Hawk doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Hawk tries for a takedown but Reis manages to get underhooks.
Reis is trying to break the clinch but Hawk is controlling him.

Hawk escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
A head kick from Hawk lands but Reis takes it in his stride.
A big left from Hawk misses.

Hawk drives through and clinches with Reis against the cage.

Reis tries to circle away but Hawk has him pinned against the cage.
Hawk has Reis pressed against the cage, preventing Reis from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Hawk drags the fight down to the ground.

Hawk had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Reis defends it easily.
Hawk is breathing heavily.
Reis wants to stand but Hawk has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Reis gets to his feet. Hawk looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Reis connects with a body shot that sends Hawk's belly button to the back.

Hawk pushes Reis up against the cage in a clinch.

Hawk's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Reis swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Some wild striking there from Reis.
Hawk on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Hawk doesn't manage to clinch there - Reis circles away.

Hawk clinches up with Reis and pushes him back against the cage.
Reis wants to break the clinch but can't.
Hawk has Reis pressed against the cage, preventing Reis from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Reis wants to get back to striking at distance but Hawk won't allow it.

Reis doesn't manage to clinch there - Hawk circles away.

Reis looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

and Reis counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

and Reis counters by clinching up.
Reis tries to break free but Hawk pushes him back against the cage.

Hawk breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Hawk throws a body kick the misses
and Reis counters with a stiff right hand.

and Reis counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Reis.
A frustrated look appears on Reis's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Hawk breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Reis throws a right hand that Hawk ducks under and follows up with a left that Hawk also avoids with ease.

Hawk gets in close and instigates a clinch.
We are yet to see a takedown attempt from Hawk in the fight. On paper you would think he is the more dominant ground fighter so let's see if these unusual tactics pay off.

Hawk breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Hawk throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Reis lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by Reis.
Reis throws a looping overhand right but Hawk ducks down to avoid it.
Hawk misses with a body kick.
Hawk fails with an attempt to clinch.

enabling Reis to counter with a crisp jab.
The fight stays on the outside here - Reis looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Reis tries to stand but Hawk is controlling from the bottom.
Hawk is trying to control the position but Reis postures up.
Reis is looking to stand up but Hawk won't let him.
Hawk is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Reis is controlling him.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Hawk tries to clinch there but Reis circles away.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Hawk throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Reis counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Hawk is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Reis attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Hawk pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Reis feints a jab promting Hawk to slip. Reis then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Hawk slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Hawk gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Reis throws a predictable looking body shot

and Hawk counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Reis.
Reis can't find room to land a body shot as Hawk controls the action.
Reis wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Reis letting Hawk take a breather here.

Hawk jumps guard.
Hawk wants to stand but Reis is controlling the position.
Reis knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hawk on the ground.

Hawk has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Reis has passed into side control.

Reis decides to stand up, so the ref orders Hawk to his feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Hawk looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Hawk lands a head kick!
Hawk circles away from the clinch attempt.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Hawk tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Reis misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Reis tries to bum rush Hawk with a series of wild strikes but Hawk uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Reis will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Hawk closes the distance and pushes Reis back into the cage.
Hawk tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Hawk lands a good knee to the midsection. Reis won't want to take too many of those.
Reis is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Hawk lands with a left to the head.

Hawk manages to pull guard.
Reis would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Rodrigo Reis.
I think Reis has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
