Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, John Storm! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Paavo Matinheimo! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Viktor Lagutenko and Ivan Kurochkin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A nice combination there by Matinheimo.
It looks like John Storm has been cut. Storm shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Matinheimo blocking the ground and pound attempt from Storm. Storm trying to mount his opponent but Matinheimo defends it. Storm missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Storm throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Matinheimo wants to get back to his feet. Matinheimo pushes Storm off and gets back to his feet. Storm circles away from the clinch attempt and Storm counters with a series of strikes. Matinheimo will be more careful next time no doubt. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Matinheimo gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Storm stuffs the takedown.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matinheimo takes one to the chin there. Matinheimo shoots and misses enabling Storm to counter with a crisp jab. Matinheimo gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Storm to score an easy takedown into full guard. Storm throwing strikes but missing. Storm missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Storm lands a couple of digs. Storm throwing strikes from guard but Matinheimo blocks nicely. Storm throws a strike but Matinheimo rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Storm avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Matinheimo accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Storm is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Matinheimo trying to control but Storm is working from the bottom. Matinheimo controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's three minutes gone in the round. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
The ref stands the fighters back up because John Storm just wasn't active enough. Storm scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Matinheimo misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. John Storm has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Paavo Matinheimo. Matinheimo has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him. Matinheimo is trying hard to land a takedown here. Storm sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Matinheimo looks gassed! Storm keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Matinheimo tries to clinch up The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky. and Storm counters with a left and a right that stings Matinheimo.
Matinheimo is rocked! This has been an exciting period of action! Matinheimo closes the distance but Storm moves to the side and Storm counters with a leg kick then a big left hand that sends Matinheimo down! Storm is looking to finish but Matinheimo is intelligently defending himself. Matinheimo is still in real trouble! Can Storm finish him? Storm postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Storm keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Matinheimo's head.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Storm pushes down on Matinheimo's leg and manages to get into half guard. Matinheimo seems to have recovered his senses. Storm thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Matinheimo's head. Storm throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Storm trying to control the action but Matinheimo is working from the bottom. Storm decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet. Matinheimo takes one on the chin but keeps coming.
Storm throws a right and a left that both miss. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Storm looks to land a combination but Matinheimo avoids it well. Storm lands a two punch combo.
Matinheimo with a poor takedown and Storm counters with a series of strikes that sends Matinheimo to the canvas! Storm follows down into guard, looking to finish the fight! Storm tries to free his leg and advance position but Matinheimo is retaining full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
John Storm dominated that round. The cut man is working on John Storm's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Matinheimo keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Jab by Storm. Matinheimo tries to clinch but fails miserably and Storm counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt. Storm scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Storm lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Matinheimo needs to keep his hands up - Storm had a free shot at his head there. Matinheimo wants to clinch up but Storm keeps it at a distance. Matinheimo shoots for a double leg takedown but Storm sprawls well. He's pushed Matinheimo's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Matinheimo throws a left and a right that both miss
and Storm counters with a straight right hand. Storm misses with a wild combination.
Matinheimo takes a body punch but keeps moving. Storm looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Matinheimo! The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Storm landing strikes from the mount and Matinheimo is in trouble! Matinheimo is breathing heavily. Storm lands a big shot to the head and Matinheimo winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
