The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Phil swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Alves. Phil misses with a series of wild punches.
Phil getting the better of the striking in that exchange. Phil throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Alves with a poor takedown and Phil counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Alves shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Phil counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Alves's guard now. Alves is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Phil tries to stand but Alves is controlling from the bottom. Alves working for a triangle but Phil defends it easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alves is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Phil defends well. Phil postures up.
Phil must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Alves looking to hit a scissor sweep but Phil is one step ahead there. Alves working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Phil doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Alves is tightening it up a little... Phil has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Phil reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Phil taps out! nice BJJ there by Alves!
