PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Jd Almanez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Studebaker Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Almanez comes into the arena with Amazing by Kanye West blaring out of the sound system. Hawk has chosen silver hawk as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jd Almanez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Studebaker Hawk!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Bruno Lombardi and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Almanez takes a body punch but keeps moving.
A head kick misses from Almanez.
Hawk connects with a jab.
Almanez tries to clinch
and Almanez takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Almanez scores with a three punch combo!


It looks like Studebaker Hawk has been cut.
Hawk keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Almanez wants to clinch

and Hawk counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Almanez's guard now.
Hawk postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Almanez wants to stand up but Hawk is controlling him.
Hawk in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Hawk prevents Almanez from getting back to his feet.

Hawk drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hawk jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hawk won't allow Almanez to get back to his feet.

Hawk thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Almanez pushes Hawk off and gets back to his feet.

Hawk scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Hawk thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Hawk bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Almanez's head.
Almanez moves forwards but Hawk connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Almanez throws a series of punches but Hawk avoids them all with ease.
Almanez moves to clinch but Hawk breaks away
and Hawk counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Almanez thinking.
A left lands for Hawk.
Hawk thuds a left hand into Almanez's body.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as Almanez checks a leg kick.
Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Hawk lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Almanez has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Almanez and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.
Hawk throws a right and a left that both miss.
Hawk fails to land with a series of punches.
Almanez wants to clinch

Hawk scores with a nice right hand.
Almanez closes the distance looking to clinch
and Hawk counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Almanez thinking.

Hawk fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Almanez, pushing him back against the cage.
Hawk has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Almanez is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Hawk drops down looking for an ankle pick but Almanez pulls his leg out and moves away.

Hawk gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Almanez to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Almanez wants to control from the top but Hawk keeps moving.
Almanez has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Almanez trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Almanez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Hawk keeping moving, preventing Almanez from controlling successfully.
Hawk has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Almanez won't allow Hawk to sweep him here.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Hawk is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Hawk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

We're going to have a standup here because Jd Almanez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Almanez scores a takedown into full mount!
Hawk is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Hawk really trying hard to get back to half guard here.

Almanez wants to control the pace but Hawk is squirming around nicely.

Almanez jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Hawk manages to avoid the submission attempt.
Hawk gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Almanez is trying to control the action in half guard but Hawk is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawk is looking to improve his position.
Hawk flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Studebaker Hawk dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Studebaker Hawk's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Hawk connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Almanez momentarily.
Almanez closes the distance looking to clinch

and Hawk counters by moving into the clinch.

Almanez has Hawk pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Almanez pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Hawk tumbling to the mat - Almanez dives into Hawk's guard.

Hawk has his foot on Almanez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Almanez works his way back into a safe position though.

Hawk working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Almanez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Hawk is tightening it up a little... Almanez has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Almanez reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Almanez taps out! nice BJJ there by Hawk!
