PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chris Mickles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gilbert Hernandez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, I have no idea who's going to take this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chris Mickles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gilbert Hernandez!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mickles clinches.
Hernandez tries to work over Mickles's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Hernandez is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Mickles is defending well for now.

Mickles pulls Hernandez into guard.
Mickles keeping moving, preventing Hernandez from controlling successfully.
Hernandez trying to stand up but can't free himself from Mickles's guard.
Hernandez throws and elbow that misses. Mickles uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Hernandez's guard. Nice move by Mickles!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mickles slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hernandez tries to control the position but he's not in luck - Mickles easily slips into full mount!

Mickles working for a submission but Hernandez is keeping him at bay.

Mickles working for a guillotine from mount but Hernandez is in no mood to give up.
Hernandez regains half guard.

Hernandez trying to control but Mickles postures up.
Hernandez wants to get back to full guard.
Hernandez is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mickles wants to pass the guard but Hernandez is defending well.
Mickles passes to side control.
Mickles looking to control but instead Hernandez has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mickles looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Mickles is looking to advance position but Hernandez won't allow it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Mickles looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Mickles is thwarting Hernandez's attempts to control the position.
Hernandez tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mickles content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Mickles prevents Hernandez from improving his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chris Mickles dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Mickles misses with a lunging right hand
and Hernandez connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.


It looks like Chris Mickles has been cut.
Mickles misses with an uppercut
and Hernandez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Hernandez, as that shot connected.

Hernandez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mickles sprawls well initially but Hernandez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Hernandez looks to land a strike but Mickles avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Hernandez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Hernandez wants to control from the top but Mickles keeps moving.

That's one minute gone in the round.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Mickles working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hernandez doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Hernandez manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hernandez wants to stand but Mickles has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Hernandez has gone for a leg lock! Mickles slips out almost immediately though and dives into Hernandez's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mickles wants to pass the guard but Hernandez is keeping the position.

Mickles stands up from Hernandez's guard - Mickles perhaps looking for a knockout.
Mickles swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Hernandez counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Hernandez prevents Mickles from improving his position.
Hernandez is trying to control. Mickles wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Hernandez not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Mickles tries to roll over but Hernandez keeps him under control.
Hernandez is stalling here. Mickles is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Hernandez seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Mickles has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Mickles is staying tight to Hernandez's torso, preventing him from escaping.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hernandez is trying to improve his position.
Hernandez is trying to escape the position but Mickles is controlling the position.
Hernandez struggling a bit here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gilbert Hernandez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Chris Mickles's cut.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Mickles misses with the combination.
A looping hook to the body misses from Mickles. Hernandez does a little dance to reset his feet.
Mickles is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Hernandez.
Mickles throws a lazy uppercut

and Hernandez counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Hernandez decides to return to a standing position.
Mickles jabs at Hernandez's body.
Mickles stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Mickles wants it to stay on the feet.
Hernandez doesn't manage to clinch there - Mickles circles away.
A big left from Mickles misses.

Mickles pushes Hernandez up against the cage in a clinch.
Mickles tries to break the clinch but Hernandez is controlling the position.

Mickles decides to pull guard.
Mickles working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Hernandez.
Hernandez throws a strike but Mickles rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mickles wants to control from the top but Hernandez keeps moving.
Mickles postures up.

Mickles has gone for a leg lock! Hernandez slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mickles's guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Hernandez tries to control but Mickles wriggling away.
Mickles avoids a series of strikes thrown by Hernandez.
Hernandez controlling his opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!
Gilbert Hernandez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Hernandez has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
