Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Joel Sands (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Cowelll (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Joel Sands has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Joel Sands!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Cowelll!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sands tries for a takedown but Cowelll sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Cowelll throws a left and a right that both miss

and Sands counters with a single leg into guard. Cowelll didn't expect that.
Sands won't allow Cowelll to get back to his feet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sands throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Cowelll works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Cowelll throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Sands stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Sands drops his hands momentarily and Cowelll takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Cowelll might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Sands kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cowelll connects with a nice short shot to Sands's temple.

Cowelll postures up and lands a big shot to Sands's brow.

Cowelll will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Sands is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.

Cowelll shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Sands eats them both and turns towards Cowelll to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.

Cowelll throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Sands on the side of the head.
Sands doesn't manage to clinch there - Cowelll circles away.

Cowelll pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Sands back to the cage. Cowelll follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Cowelll feints a jab promting Sands to slip. Cowelll then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Sands slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.

Sands is figuring out what he wants to do next.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sands is looking to take a break and control but Cowelll is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

We're going to have a standup here because Joel Sands wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Sands tries to clinch but Cowelll is having none of it.
Cowelll throws a leg kick but Sands sees it coming and moves out of range.

Sands tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Cowelll manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Joel Sands has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Mike Cowelll is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Cowelll looks for the body kick but Sands saw that one coming.
Cowelll feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Sandss jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!

Mike Cowelll comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Cowelll has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
