Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Alexander Karpushev! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ivan Drago! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Sergei Dronov and Konstantin Menshow.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Karpushev tries for a takedown but Drago circles away easily and Karpushev takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Karpushev tries to sprawl but Drago drives through with a takedown into half guard. Karpushev wants to improve his position but Drago is controlling well.
Drago scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Drago stops Karpushev from getting back to his feet.
Drago is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Karpushev sees it coming and defends easily. Drago is keen to just control but Karpushev is a slippery customer. Karpushev has hold of Drago's hands but Drago slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Drago lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Drago lands a nice short elbow. Karpushev is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Drago looks to land a strike but Karpushev avoids it nicely and regains full guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Drago sitting in guard here, content to control. Drago postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Drago wants to control from the top but Karpushev keeps moving. Drago has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Karpushev manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Drago manages to get himself to full guard.
Drago working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Karpushev doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Karpushev manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Drago looking for a triangle here. Karpushev is fighting it but it looks tight! Drago pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, Karpushev is tapping out - this one is all over!
