PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Smokey McPot (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Damien William (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McPot's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, D.T.A.P. - Nephew. Damien William told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Smokey McPot!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Damien William!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Alec Ball and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A looping hook to the body misses from McPot. William does a little dance to reset his feet.
McPot misses with a body shot.
William avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
McPot swings widly with a right hand
and William counters with a lovely straight right hand!
William ducks under a wild hook from McPot.
McPot tries to clinch
and William cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
McPot throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body.
McPot throws a looping overhand right but William ducks down to avoid it.
William checks a leg kick.
The fighters circle momentarily. McPot darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
William uses good head movement to avoid the hook from McPot.

McPot misses with a looping left.
McPot fails in his attempt to clinch.
McPot moves out of range of the leg kick from William.
Some bone on bone action there as William checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
McPot lands a head shot.
McPot's corner calls for a 1-2. McPot obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
William moves out of range as McPot throws a body kick.
McPot lands a nice looking body shot.
A big right from McPot misses.

McPot dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on William. That did some damage!

McPot lands with a straight right. William didn't see that one coming.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
McPot doesn't manage to clinch there - William circles away.

McPot smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
McPot punishes William's body with a nice straight punch.
A clash of legs there as William blocks the low kick.
McPot misses with an attempted mid kick.
A jab from McPot finds it's way through William's defenses.
A combination from McPot does no damage.

William slips a straight right by McPot.

McPot shoots in and gets a takedown into William's guard.

William escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. McPot gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
William can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as McPot controls the pace.
McPot's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Smokey McPot.
William walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

and William decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in McPot's guard.

William wants to pass the guard but McPot is keeping the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Smokey McPot.

William displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as McPot throws out the jab.

William shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says McPot as he avoids it easily.

and William counters with a nice double leg into side control. McPot won't be happy with that.

William is looking to take a break and control but McPot is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

William looking to punish the body of his opponent here but McPot is avoiding damage well.

William goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, McPot rolls with the submission and now he's on top in William's guard! Nice work there by McPot!

McPot frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

McPot misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

That was a close second round but I would say that Smokey McPot will probably get the nod.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

William tries to move into range but McPot moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.

McPot throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

and William counters with a left and a right that stings McPot.
McPot throws a body punch but William moves out of range.
McPot lands a nice looking kick to the body. William takes a step back to recover.
William thows a leg kick but McPot checks it
and McPot counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
McPot tries to clinch there but William circles away.
McPot looks to score with a jab to the body but William is just out of range.

McPot connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Smokey McPot seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
William throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around McPot's waist but McPot gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing William off to one side.

and William counters with a lovely straight right hand!

William takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
McPot throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

McPot buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
McPot throws an overhand right that lands on William's shoulder, as William tries to avoid the shot.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
William thows a leg kick but McPot checks it
and McPot counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
McPot ducks down and throws a hook to the body but William moves away.

McPot misses with a left hand

and William counters with a nice double leg into guard.

McPot wriggles free and stands up.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

McPot is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in William's half guard.

McPot jabs William right on the nose. William blinks but takes it well.

William has his foot on McPot's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. McPot works his way back into a safe position though.

William is absolutely dripping with sweat - he looks exhausted.

McPot is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

McPot leaves William with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

William stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. McPot swivels though and keeps the full guard.

McPot is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because William is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
McPot thows a huge punch but William dodges it nicely.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for McPot, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
