The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Kovalchuk drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Sloppy strikes there by Kovalchuk.
Kovalchuk tries to move into full mount but can't pass Jason's legs.
Kovalchuk fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Kovalchuk tries to advance to mount but can't.
Jason is trying to improve his position.
Kovalchuk trying to control the action but Jason is working from the bottom.
Kovalchuk really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Jason. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Kovalchuk thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jason gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Jason is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Kovalchuk's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Kovalchuk's back!

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Kovalchuk wants to get back to his feet.
Jason gets his hands free as Kovalchuk looks to control.
