PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Punchy McPunches (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Starsmore (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

McPunches shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Starsmore wants to control the position but McPunches says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
McPunches looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Starsmore with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
McPunches throws a strike but Starsmore avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

McPunches has his takedown stuffed
letting Starsmore counter with a right hand.
McPunches throws a hook but Starsmore avoids it easily.
A clash of legs there as McPunches blocks the low kick.
McPunches doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Starsmore counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Starsmore turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.

Starsmore feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Jon Starsmore has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

so Starsmore counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
McPunches wants to stand and escape but Starsmore is having none of it.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
McPunches doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Starsmore counters with a nice double leg into side control. McPunches won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Punchy McPunches. That's going to take a lot out of him.

McPunches pushes Starsmore away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Starsmore gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Jon Starsmore showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Starsmore is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and McPunches defends well.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as McPunches accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Starsmore isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. McPunches stacks Starsmore on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by McPunches!
Starsmore tries to buck McPunches off but McPunches is having none of it.

I think Starsmore has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
