Schmidt has chosen Erbarme, zu spät, die Hesse komme! as his entrance music. Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Heinz Peter Schmidt enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Cain Velasquez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Heinz Peter Schmidt! The judges for this bout are Ivan Kurochkin, Igor Prikhodko and Illya Tyunina.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Velasquez scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
It looks like Heinz Peter Schmidt has been cut. Schmidt looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight! Jab by Velasquez. Velasquez lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Velasquez sizes up Schmidt with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Nice uppercut there from Velasquez. Schmidt drops his hands momentarily and Velasquez takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Schmidt throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Cain Velasquez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Velasquez moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body. Velasquez lands a jab followed by a vicious hook that sends Schmidt sprawling to the canvas. Velasquez follows him down, looking for the kill. Can Schmidt hang on? Velasquez is trying to control the action in half guard but Schmidt is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Velasquez is working for a submission of some sort.

That's one minute gone in the round. Velasquez is pressing down on Schmidt's thigh, looking to free his foot. Schmidt is holding on for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Velasquez wants to take a breather but Schmidt is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We're going to have a standup here because Cain Velasquez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Schmidt walks into a left hand.
That has opened up Heinz Peter Schmidt's cut even more. Velasquez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Schmidt paws at him with a jab and circles away. Velasquez lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Velasquez stalks Schmidt and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Schmidt's face. Schmidt staggers backwards, shaken.
The cut above Heinz Peter Schmidt's eye is starting to cause him problems now. This has been an exciting period of action! Velasquez lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Velasquez fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Velasquez cracks Schmidt with an open hand slap.
Heinz Peter Schmidt's cut is absolute horrible now. This looks like something out of a horror film with blood covering both fighters. Velasquez throws a left that rocks Schmidt and follows with a right that sends him tumbling to the canvas! Velasquez dives into side control, looking to finish! Can Schmidt regain composure!
Schmidt is rocked!
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Heinz Peter Schmidt's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Cain Velasquez!
