Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Rowell Mandapat! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Nathan Smith! The judges for this bout are James Glass, Paul Tew and Steven Brown.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith has a takedown stuffed. This fight brought to you by 5M nutrition - it's mmmmm tasty. Nice jab by Mandapat. Smith fails to land the takedown. Smith takes a hook to the side of the head. I wonder if that's got his ears ringing.
Smith shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Mandapat is trying to defend but Smith finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mandapat keeps working. Smith is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
That's one minute gone in the round. Smith is looking to take a break and control but Mandapat is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Still in half guard, Smith seems content to control. It looks like Smith might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Smith trying to control from half guard but Mandapat is working away. Smith trying to control the pace.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Nathan Smith hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Smith passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Mandapat! Smith trying to control but Mandapat is having none of it. Smith working for a submission but Mandapat is keeping him at bay. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith wants to control the pace but Mandapat is squirming around nicely. Smith working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Mandapat turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Smith off and cradles Mandapat's limp body as Smith celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Nathan Smith!
