The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendes has taken the fight to the clinch.

Silva drops back looking for a leg! Mendes is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mendes manages to kick Silva off! Silva jumps back into Mendes's guard. Mendes keeping moving, preventing Silva from controlling successfully. Silva is really struggling to control Mendes but he's trying to hold on to the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Silva throws and elbow that misses. Mendes uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Silva's guard. Mendes slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Silva is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Silva regains half guard there - taking advantage of Mendes's attempt to lay and pray for a moment. Mendes working over Silva with some ground and pound. Silva looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Silva holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Silva actively working from the bottom here. Mendes content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Mendes is trying to control the action in half guard but Silva is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Silva is not content to let Mendes control the position. It looks like Mendes is going to stand back up.

Silva is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Mendes tries to free his leg and advance position but Silva is retaining full guard. Mendes wants to control from the top but Silva keeps moving. Silva working for a triangle but Mendes defends it easily.
Mendes is looking to work some ground and pound but Silva has wrist control. Mendes must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

He'll be looking to tighten that up but Mendes can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Silva had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Mendes defends it easily. Mendes is looking to advance position but Silva has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Silva landing shots from mount. Mendes wants to control but Silva is having none of it.

Silva trying to move into half guard but instead Mendes has managed to sweep! Mendes got a little sloppy there for a moment and Silva has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Mendes has managed to get both his arms back between Silva's legs - danger averted. Mendes has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Silva to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Mendes is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Silva pulls down on the head and he's put Mendes to sleep! This one is all over!
