PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jose Cabrera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Piotr Wafel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jose Cabrera!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Piotr Wafel!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Thiago Cunha and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Wafel misses with a takedown
enabling Cabrera to counter with a crisp jab.
Wafel gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Wafel takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Wafel tries for a takedown but Cabrera circles away easily
and Cabrera counters with a nice uppercut.
Jose Cabrera has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Piotr Wafel.
Wafel shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Cabrera connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Cabrera has Wafel up against the cage in a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cabrera throws a knee to the head but misses.
Wafel drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Cabrera gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Wafel tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Cabrera just stands there and leans against the cage.
Wafel wants a takedown.
Wafel tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Cabrera is trying to break the clinch but Wafel has him pressed against the cage.

Cabrera looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Wafel goes for a takedown attempt but Cabrera pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Wafel shoots and misses

and Cabrera counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Wafel looks gassed!
Cabrera is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Wafel is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Cabrera is looking to advance position but Wafel won't allow it.
Still in half guard, Cabrera seems content to control.
Wafel wants to improve his position but Cabrera is controlling well.

Wafel tries to kick Cabrera off but Cabrera keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Cabrera shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cabrera showed some decent athleticism there.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Wafel gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cabrera content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Wafel throws a sloppy head kick

and Cabrera counters with a single leg into guard. Wafel didn't expect that.
Cabrera slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Cabrera is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Wafel keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Cabrera tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Jose Cabrera.

Wafel gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Cabrera to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Jose Cabrera overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Wafel has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Cabrera is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Wafel.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!



Cabrera takes the fight into the clinch.
Cabrera lands an elbow just above Wafel 's eye.
With the fighters up against the cage, Cabrera throws an elbow but misses.
Wafel has Cabrera pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Cabrera manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Cabrera misses with a knee to the head.
Cabrera with an attempt at a knee that misses.
Wafel jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Cabrera walks away with a smile on his face. Wafel gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

and Cabrera decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Wafel's guard.
Jose Cabrera has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Piotr Wafel.
Wafel takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Cabrera is stalling in the full guard.
Cabrera knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Wafel on the ground.

Wafel has his foot on Cabrera's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Cabrera works his way back into a safe position though.

Cabrera throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Wafel blocks it with crossed arms.

Cabrera lands a left hand.
Cabrera stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.

Wafel shoots and misses

and Cabrera counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Wafel's guard now.

Wafel working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Cabrera doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Cabrera manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Wafel looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cabrera sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Wafel's guard.

Wafel manages to get to full guard.

Well Cabrera has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
