Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
6 - 18 - 0, fighting out of New York, Happy Gunderson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jacob Alexander! The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Chad Campbell and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gunderson shoots in and bounces Alexander off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Gunderson stands up over Alexander, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Gunderson drops back looking for a leg! Alexander is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Alexander manages to kick Gunderson off! Gunderson jumps back into Alexander's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gunderson stops Alexander from standing up. Gunderson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Gunderson slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Alexander prevents Gunderson from improving position. Alexander manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gunderson's best efforts. Alexander trying to control but Gunderson postures up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alexander tries to get to full guard but Gunderson has control of the leg. Alexander looks like he's trying to stand up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gunderson trying to control from half guard but Alexander is working away. Gunderson wants to work for an arm triangle but Alexander is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Gunderson is working for a kimura but Alexander is defending it quite comfortably.
Alexander is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Gunderson stops Alexander from getting back to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Gunderson has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. You get the feeling that Alexander really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Gunderson has hold of Alexander's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Alexander manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Gunderson working for a submission but Alexander is keeping him at bay. Alexander is trying to stand up. Alexander really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gunderson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Gunderson is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Alexander has managed to escape the submission attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alexander is trying to get back to his feet but can't. Gunderson goes for an armbar but Alexander turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Alexander. Alexander chips away with some ground and pound. Gunderson looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Alexander must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Alexander cracks Gunderson with a solid left hand. Alexander is in close to Gunderson's body, working some short punches and elbows. Alexander pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Gunderson is keeping the position for now. Alexander trying to control the position from guard on top but Gunderson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Gunderson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Gunderson is breathing heavily. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Alexander's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gunderson looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Gunderson thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage. Alexander working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Gunderson's head. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Alexander postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Alexander postures up and lands a big shot to Gunderson's brow. Alexander with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Gunderson is rocked! Alexander gets to his feet and stands over Gunderson, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Gunderson felt that one! Alexander unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Gunderson from any more punishment!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jacob Alexander!
