PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Don Cragen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jonathan Goldsmith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Cragen kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Captain Cragen. Goldsmith has chosen Dos Equis as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Don Cragen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jonathan Goldsmith!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Cragen closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Cragen lands in his opponent's guard.
Cragen wants to control from the top but Goldsmith keeps moving.

Goldsmith pushes Cragen off and gets back to his feet.
Goldsmith closes the distance and clinches up with Cragen, looking for a takedown. Goldsmith pushes Cragen against the cage but Cragen circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Cragen shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Goldsmith makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

Goldsmith has a takedown stuffed.
Goldsmith is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Goldsmith checks a leg kick.

Goldsmith tries to sprawl but Cragen drives through with a takedown into half guard.

Cragen is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Goldsmith sees it coming and defends easily.
Goldsmith slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Goldsmith is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Goldsmith manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Cragen is trying to stand up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Cragen working to try and regain half guard.
Cragen is working hard here to advance position.

Goldsmith is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Cragen has managed to escape the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Don Cragen will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Goldsmith lands a jab-cross combination.
Cragen looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Cragen throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Goldsmith.
Cragen misses with a takedown attempt

and Goldsmith counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Goldsmith postures up and lands a big shot to Cragen's brow.

Goldsmith stands and steps away. Cragen gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cragen throws a lazy body kick
and Goldsmith counters with a series of strikes. Cragen will be more careful next time no doubt.
Cragen has his takedown stuffed

and Goldsmith counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Cragen's guard now.


Cragen is rocked!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Goldsmith slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Oh Cragen is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Goldsmith slips nicely into half guard.
Cragen seems to have got his legs back now.
Cragen is trying to escape back to his feet but Goldsmith uses the scramble to pass into side control.

Goldsmith is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Cragen is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Goldsmith decides to stand back up.
Cragen misses with a takedown attempt

and Goldsmith holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Don Cragen. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Goldsmith pulls Cragen into guard.
Goldsmith is trying to keep Cragen in close.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Goldsmith striking off his back but it's not causing Cragen any problems.
Cragen connects with a couple of short punches.
Goldsmith looking to control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Cragen wants to control from the top but Goldsmith keeps moving.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jonathan Goldsmith wasn't active enough on the ground.
Cragen tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Goldsmith paws at him with a jab and circles away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Cragen tries for a takedown but Goldsmith circles away easily

and Goldsmith counters by clinching up.
Goldsmith lands with a short punch from the clinch.
Goldsmith drops down looking for an ankle pick but Cragen pulls his leg out and moves away.
Cragen showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Goldsmith.
Cragen fails with the takedown

and Goldsmith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cragen's guard.
Goldsmith's corner is telling him to maintain position.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Cragen escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Goldsmith gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jonathan Goldsmith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Cragen moves out of range of the body kick.
Cragen has his takedown stuffed
and Goldsmith counters with a three punch combo that has Cragen backing up. Cragen nods at Goldsmith to acknowledge the strikes.
Cragen misses with a takedown
and Goldsmith counters with a left to the body.
Goldsmith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Goldsmith lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent.
Goldsmith moves in looking to clinch but Cragen pushes him off.
Cragen falls off balance throwing a combination

and Goldsmith counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Goldsmith gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Goldsmith tries to clinch there but Cragen circles away.
Cragen with a lazy takedown attempt
and Goldsmith counters with a left and a right that stings Cragen.


It looks like Don Cragen has been cut.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Don Cragen. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Goldsmith counters with a huge uppercut, hook combination that drops Cragen! The ref has seen enough - he's dived in to stop the fight! Brutal strikes by Goldsmith!
