PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Philippe Chuteboxe (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Newton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Daniel Cesar and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chuteboxe throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Newton counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Newton scores with a takedown into Chuteboxe's guard.
Chuteboxe is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Newton is controlling him.
Chuteboxe keeping full guard, as Newton tries to pass.
Newton distracts Chuteboxe with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Chuteboxe is working an open guard so Newton takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Chuteboxe enables Newton to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Chuteboxe manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

and Newton decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Chuteboxe's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

OK we're going to have a standup here. Carlos Newton hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Chuteboxe knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Newton on the ground.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Carlos Newton hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Chuteboxe.
A low kick from Chuteboxe is predictable there

so Newton counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Newton engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Newton closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Newton lands in his opponent's guard.

Newton slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Chuteboxe pushes Newton away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Newton gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Newton remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Chuteboxe is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Newton is controlling him well.

Newton has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Newton shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Chuteboxe is trying to defend but Newton finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Newton. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Let's hope that Newton has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Newton passes the guard and advances to mount!
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Newton takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Philippe Chuteboxe has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

BOOM! Newton connects with a massive shot to the dome!
Carlos Newton is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Chuteboxe swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.

I've got Newton winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
