Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Eki Vieri! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mike Puska! The judges for this bout are Marco Blurström, Johanna Lukiainen and Ben Zyskovitsi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vieri misses with a lunging right hand
and Puska cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Puska throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Vieri was covering up waiting for the punch and Puska finishes the takedown easily into guard. Vieri wants to stand up but Puska is controlling him. Puska not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Puska sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Vieri's guard. Puska performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Vieri knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Puska on the ground. Vieri looks like he's trying to stand up.
Puska is taking a breather. Vieri says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
That's one minute gone in the round. Puska is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Vieri is trying to stand.
Puska looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Puska prevents Vieri from standing back up.
Puska trying to mount his opponent but Vieri defends it. Puska stalling. Let's hope that Puska has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Horrible takedown by Puska or perhaps it was just good defense by Vieri which made him look bad. Vieri throws a left and a right that both miss
and Puska decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Vieri's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vieri is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Vieri kicks Puska off and gets to his feet. Vieri misses with a lunging right hand
and Puska counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Vieri can't keep his opponent in guard - Puska advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Vieri is breathing heavily. Puska slows the pace down in half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Vieri pushes Puska off looking to stand but Puska dives back in and keeps control.
Puska moves into full mount! Vieri won't be happy about that! The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Puska takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though. Vieri is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Puska locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Vieri is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Mike Puska! Mike Puska retains his bantamweight title!
