Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Greg Birch! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cain Marks! The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, David Schapiro and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Birch misses with the combination.
A choreographed right hand from Birch misses the target. Birch lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Marks backs up against the cage.
A head kick misses from Birch. Some wild striking there from Birch.
Greg Birch seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Birch fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Marks walks into a left hand. Birch takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Marks dodges the punch combination from Birch.
Birch scores with a jab to the head.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Birch tries to clinch up but Marks circles away and keeps his distance.
That's one minute gone in the round. Birch feints and as Marks raises his hands in defense, Birch changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Birch tries to stand but Marks is controlling from the bottom. Marks had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Birch is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Marks Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Birch's back instead. Birch wants to get back to his feet. Marks patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here? Birch trying to get back to his feet but Marks is in full control for now. Birch prevents Marks from getting a body triangle. Marks controlling from the back. Marks struggling to keep hold of the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Marks working for a RNC but it's not happening just yet. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Marks looks gassed! Birch controlling the position well but he knows he's in a bad position. Birch is trying to defend against the choke here but Marks has an arm under his chin. This one might not last much longer. Marks Tightens the hold and Birch taps out furiously! Marks displays superior BJJ to win the fight.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Cain Marks!
