Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Cody McKenzie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Rene Perez! The judges for this bout are Nard Betker, Paulsen Ambrosius and Daniel Blasius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McKenzie tries for a takedown but Perez circles away easily and Perez counters with a nice uppercut. McKenzie misses with a takedown attempt and Perez counters with a lovely straight right hand! McKenzie with a lazy takedown attempt and Perez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Cody McKenzie. That's going to take a lot out of him. McKenzie with a lazy takedown attempt and Perez counters with a straight right hand. McKenzie misses with a takedown attempt and Perez counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. McKenzie has his takedown stuffed and Perez counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. McKenzie shoots in but doesn't get the takedown enabling Perez to counter with a crisp jab. McKenzie is breathing heavily. McKenzie fails with the takedown and Perez connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. McKenzie with a lazy takedown attempt and McKenzie takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. McKenzie gets caught flat footed, as Perez shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Perez trying to control the position from guard on top but McKenzie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's one minute gone in the round. Perez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Perez passes McKenzie's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Perez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but McKenzie does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Perez drops an elbow to the side of McKenzie's head. Perez wants to take a breather but McKenzie is having none of it. Perez takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Perez wants to lay and pray for a moment but McKenzie keeps working. Perez might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control McKenzie kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Perez frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Perez is landing with some decent strikes but McKenzie is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. McKenzie in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. McKenzie is bucking up trying to escape but Perez cracks him with another couple of good strikes. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McKenzie is in all sorts of trouble here.
Perez content just to control the position here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The referee warns McKenzie that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Perez breaks from McKenzie's wrist control and lands an elbow. Perez working away from the top, dropping strikes. McKenzie tries to lock up and control but Perez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. McKenzie working to try and regain half guard.
Perez unloading with bombs! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Perez trying to control but he's not successful this time. Perez raining down hammerfists from mount.
McKenzie is rocked! Perez is landing with some decent strikes but McKenzie is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Oh McKenzie is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! McKenzie is trying desperately to improve position. Perez lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Perez lands a big shot there that rocks McKenzie but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Perez landing strikes, looking to finish! McKenzie takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Perez's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
