PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Bryan Sherk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tiago Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendez is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Trap Door. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 11 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Bryan Sherk!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 12 - 0, fighting out of London, Tiago Mendez!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, James Atkins and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Mendez looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Mendez trying to control the position from guard on top but Sherk is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mendez throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sherk works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Mendez prevents Sherk from getting back to his feet.
Mendez stands and throws Sherk's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Sherk is not content to let Mendez control the position.

Sherk is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Mendez looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Sherk is trying to control Mendez's posture but Mendez avoids it.
Mendez with the ground and pound but Sherk regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendez is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Sherk has managed to free his arm - good work.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Sherk is trying to stand up here but Mendez is controlling him well.
Mendez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sherk does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Sherk has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mendez is working away from the top position though.
Mendez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Mendez seems to be looking for submissions.
Mendez wants to stand up but Sherk manages to regain full guard.

Mendez wants to control from the top but Sherk keeps moving.
Sherk is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mendez drops back, looking for a kneebar! Sherk looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Sherk looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Sherk!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Mendez gets back to half guard.
Nice strikes from Sherk there.
Sherk passes into side control, despite Mendez's attempt to control the position.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mendez manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Mendez throws a looping overhand right but Sherk ducks down to avoid it.

and Sherk cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

and Sherk counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Mendez not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Mendez controls Sherk momentarily but Sherk frees himself.

Sherk drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mendez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Sherk has Mendez in his guard.

Mendez looking to pass the guard.
Mendez is looking to advance position but Sherk has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
Sherk cracks Mendez with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Sherk avoids the attempt from Mendez to control.
Mendez tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mendez tries to hold on but Sherk postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sherk is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Mendez is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Sherk is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Mendez is surviving well by controlling Sherk's body position as best he can.
Mendez is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Sherk trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Sherk prevents Mendez from getting the reversal.

Mendez trying desperately to get to his feet.
Sherk lands a nice shot to the head.


It looks like Tiago Mendez has been cut.
Sherk tries to control but Mendez wriggling away.
Sherk avoids the attempt from Mendez to control.
Sherk is landing with some decent strikes but Mendez is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.
Mendez is trying to escape the mount.
Sherk fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Sherk is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Mendez can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mendez bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Mendez drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Sherk dives on top into guard.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Sherk will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Mendez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sherk doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sherk manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Mendez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Mendez pushes a forearm under Sherk's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Sherk is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
