PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Harry Kalas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Danny Mera (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kalas comes to the cage accompanied by shut em down. Mera has chosen The Automatic - Monster as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 10 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Harry Kalas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Danny Mera!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Aleksandr Martynov and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mera falls off balance throwing a combination
and Kalas counters with a straight right hand.

Kalas clinches up against the cage.
Mera doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Mera drops down looking for an ankle pick but Kalas pulls his leg out and moves away.

Kalas closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mera to the mat! Mera manages to get full guard.
Mera avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Kalas slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Kalas thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Kalas missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Mera wants to sweep but no luck.

Kalas drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Kalas jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mera wants to stand up but Kalas is controlling him.
Kalas passes Mera's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Kalas looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Kalas missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Mera really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kalas. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kalas slows the pace down in half guard.
Kalas is pressing down on Mera's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mera is holding on for now.

Harry Kalas has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Kalas closes the distance looking to clinch
and Mera counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Mera displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Kalas.

Kalas looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Kalas's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Kalas seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mera does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Mera moves to clinch but Kalas breaks away

and Kalas counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Kalas.

Kalas has Mera pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Kalas pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Mera tumbling to the mat - Kalas dives into Mera's guard.
Mera looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kalas is one step ahead there.
Kalas in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Mera is trying to hold Kalas in close to prevent damage but Kalas has managed to pass into half guard.
Well, if Kalas is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Kalas is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Mera has managed to free his arm - good work.

Kalas is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mera can do anything to dispel that myth.

Mera has hold of Kalas's hands but Kalas slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
Kalas takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Kalas prevents Mera from improving his position.
Kalas throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Kalas is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mera defends it well.
Kalas passes to full mount!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kalas controlling the pace for now.
Kalas wants to control the pace but Mera is squirming around nicely.
Kalas lands a heavy elbow.

Kalas has hold of Mera's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Mera manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Kalas controlling the position easily from mount.
Kalas can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mera is looking to escape.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Mera attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Mera throws a lazy uppercut
and Kalas counters with a one-two to the body.

Kalas gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Mera to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Mera trying to control but Kalas is working from the bottom.
Kalas is looking to stand up but Mera isn't so interested in that idea.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kalas is on top in guard.

Harry Kalas overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Kalas slips nicely into half guard.

Kalas is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Danny Mera has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kalas stalling.
Kalas not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Kalas perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Harry Kalas wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Mera doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Kalas counters with a two punch combo.
Mera tries to clinch there but Kalas circles away.

Harry Kalas is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Kalas closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Kalas is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Mera!

Kalas seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Mera for as long as he can get away with.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Kalas blocking some punches.

Mera being controlled here momentarily.
Mera trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Mera wants to pass the guard but Kalas is keeping the position.
Mera must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Kalas manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mera manages to get himself to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Harry Kalas showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Kalas has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
