Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Desmond Miles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jason Penl (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jason Penl has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Desmond Miles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jason Penl!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, John Mangel and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penl misses with a combination

so Miles counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Penl wants to get back to his feet but Miles is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Miles forces his way into half guard.
Penl is trying to maintain the position but Miles is very close to passing his half guard.
Penl won't allow Miles to pass to mount.
Miles with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Penl wants to control but Miles is keeping busy.
Penl is trying to stand.
Penl works his way to full guard. Good work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penl is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Miles is controlling him.
Penl not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Miles scoring with some ground and pound.

Penl working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Miles doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Miles manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Miles pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Penl is keeping the position for now.
Penl is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Miles wants to pass the guard but Penl is keeping the position.
Penl is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Miles is controlling him.
Miles lands a couple of digs.
Miles is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Penl is looking to stand up but Miles isn't so interested in that idea.

Miles throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Penl works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Miles has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Penl is looking for a triangle but Miles pushes his legs off easily.

Miles throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Miles wants to control from the top but Penl keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Desmond Miles wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Penl misses with a shot to the body
and Miles counters with a series of strikes. Penl will be more careful next time no doubt.
Miles throws an overhand right that lands on Penl's shoulder, as Penl tries to avoid the shot.
Miles throws a lazy uppercut

and Penl counters with a nice double leg into side control. Miles won't be happy with that.
Miles gets back to half guard.
Penl prevents Miles from improving his position.
Penl missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Penl looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Miles avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Penl.

Penl is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Miles sees it coming and defends easily.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Penl connects with a nice short shot to Miles's temple.

Penl looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Penl decides to return to a standing position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Jason Penl will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Miles with a lazy takedown attempt

and Penl counters with a nice double leg into side control. Miles won't be happy with that.
Penl tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.

Penl stands up and beckons Miles to his feet.
Penl moves out of range as Miles strikes.
Penl dives in and grabs Miles's left leg, looking for a takedown. Miles pushes down on Penl's head and hops out.
Penl shoots in for a takedown but Miles shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Penl doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Miles lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Penl circles away quickly and effectively.
Penl moves in looking to clinch but Miles pushes him off.
Penl tries to clinch but Miles moves out of range.
Penl darts in trying to clinch
and Miles counters with a nice uppercut.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penl tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Miles paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Penl wants to clinch up but Miles keeps it at a distance.
Penl throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Penl throws a series of punches but Miles avoids them all with ease.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Miles is defended easily by Penl.
Penl's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Penl duly obliges.
Penl throws a combination that misses
and Miles counters with a nice uppercut.
Penl falls off balance throwing a combination
and Miles counters with an outside leg kick.
Miles swings away with a body shot that misses
and Penl counters with a one-two to the body.

Nice takedown defense from Penl. No joy for Miles on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Desmond Miles. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sloppy strikes from Miles. Those never looked like landing.
Miles misses the body punch
and Penl counters with a left and a right that stings Miles.

Miles looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Penl wants to get back to his feet but Miles is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Miles forces his way into half guard.
Miles seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Penl does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Penl tries to get to full guard but Miles has control of the leg.
Penl is staying active underneath Miles, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Penl pushes Miles off and gets back to his feet.
Penl tries to bum rush Miles with a series of wild strikes but Miles uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Penl tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Miles manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Miles swats away the attempt to clinch by Penl.
Penl throws a right hand that misses

and Miles counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Penl looking for a sweep. Not yet Penl, not yet.
Penl is breathing heavily.
Miles tries to free his leg and advance position but Penl is retaining full guard.
Miles wanted to stand there but Penl had control of the position.

Penl pushes Miles off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Miles manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Penl on his heels. He'll look to pass Penl's guard now, I'm sure.

Penl uses the cage to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Penl.
Miles shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Penl as he jumps to the side.
Penl swinging wildly here.
Nice defenses there by Penl.
Penl avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Penl tries to close the distance and clinch but Miles swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Miles connects with a jab.
Penl lands with a nice combination. Miles backs away looking to recover.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jason Penl showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Penl throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.


It looks like Desmond Miles has been cut.
Penl fails in his attempt to clinch.
Jason Penl is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
A punch lands to the side of Penl 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Penl shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
Penl throws a shot to the body.
Penl moves to clinch but Miles breaks away
and Miles counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Penl misses with a jab, cross combination.
Penl will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Miles looks to land a left hand but Penl moved out of range nicely.
Penl stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Penl wants it to stay on the feet.

Miles looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Penl is fending him off so far but Miles persists. Nope, Penl circles away and we're back to standing.

Miles gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Penl to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Penl accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Penl works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Miles taking some punishment here, with Penl in his half guard.
Nice strikes from Penl there.
Penl with the ground and pound but Miles uses the opportunity to regain guard.
Miles avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Penl wanted to stand there but Miles had control of the position.
Penl throws a big right hand that misses.
Jason Penl has got the better of the ground game so far.
Penl is looking to work some ground and pound but Miles has wrist control.
Penl trying to control the position from guard on top but Miles is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Penl gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Penl moves in looking to clinch but Miles pushes him off.

Penl darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Miles is not content to let Penl control the position.

Penl sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Miles defending well though.
Miles is looking to escape.
Miles blocking the ground and pound attempt from Penl.
Penl trying to control the action but Miles is working from the bottom.
Miles tries to roll over but Penl keeps him under control.

Penl is looking for a kimura here.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Penl wants to pass to mount but Miles is defending the position.
Penl is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

Penl thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Jason Penl comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Penl has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
