Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ryuzo Fukiko! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Fernado Tavares! The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Ian Loll and Steve Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Fukiko throws a combination that misses letting Tavares counter with a right hand. Ryuzo Fukiko seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Fukiko scores with a punch to the head. Tavares shoots in for a takedown but Fukiko shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Fukiko gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Tavares counters with a nice double leg into side control. Fukiko won't be happy with that. Fukiko is not content to let Tavares control the position. Fukiko sneaks back into half guard. Fukiko manages to get to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tavares wants to control from the top but Fukiko keeps moving. Fukiko is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Fukiko is trying to work for a kimura but Tavares is defending well.
Fukiko wants to take a breather but Tavares is having none of it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Fukiko is looking for a kimura but Tavares is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Fukiko to get the leverage. Tavares is trying to control but can't.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Fukiko trying to control the action but Tavares is working from the bottom. Fukiko stands up and beckons Tavares to join him on the feet. Fukiko shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Tavares sprawls well. Tavares wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Fukiko gets slowly back to his feet. Fukiko jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Fukiko tries to bum rush Tavares with a series of wild strikes but Tavares uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Tavares changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Fukiko looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Fukiko is looking to reverse the position. Fukiko pushes Tavares away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Tavares gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Tavares is looking to take a break and control but Fukiko is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Fukiko is trying to improve his position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Tavares working away. Fukiko sneaks back into half guard. Fukiko keeping control of the position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Ryuzo Fukiko will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Fukiko takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away. Fukiko with a hook. Fukiko shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Tavares as he jumps to the side. Tavares needs to keep his hands up - Fukiko had a free shot at his head there. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Tavares doesn't succeed with the takedown and Fukiko cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Fukiko scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction. Fukiko tries for a takedown but Tavares sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Fukiko has closed the distance and engaged Tavares in a clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fukiko tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Tavares smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Ryuzo Fukiko. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Tavares tries to keep at a distance but Fukiko has taken the fight into the clinch. Tavares tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Fukiko tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Fukiko tries to pull guard but Tavares won't allow it.
Fukiko tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Tavares smiles and moves away.
Fukiko throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Tavares. Fukiko gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Tavares counters with a single leg into guard. Fukiko didn't expect that.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tavares looking to sit in guard and control but Fukiko gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Tavares managing to control the position. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Fukiko accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Tavares is trying to control the position but Fukiko postures up. Fukiko is in close to Tavares's body, working some short punches and elbows. Tavares really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Fukiko. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Fukiko is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Fukiko stands up from guard. Let's bang! Fukiko lands with an overhand left. Tavares tries to score a power double leg takedown but Fukiko sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Tavares somewhat. Fukiko throws a series of punches but Tavares avoids them all with ease. Fukiko cracks Tavares with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Tavares takes one to the side of the head.
Tavares shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Fukiko jabs at Tavares's body. Ryuzo Fukiko is winning the standup battle so far. Tavares is breathing heavily. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Fukiko closes the distance and lands a vicious right hand that drops Tavares! Fukiko dives in looking to finish! Tavares is still trying to defend himself but he's taking too many shots and the referee has no choice but to stop the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:16 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ryuzo Fukiko! Ryuzo Fukiko is the new heavyweight champion!
