PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Vanya Bokov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carsten Brian Kassler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carsten Brian Kassler has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vanya Bokov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 6 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Carsten Brian Kassler!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Valeri Chadov and Aleksandr Martynov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Bokov gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Kassler counters with a straight right hand.

and Kassler counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Vanya Bokov. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Kassler feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Bokov working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Kassler doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Kassler manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Kassler is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Bokov is breathing heavily.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Kassler accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Kassler slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Bokov will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Kassler darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Well, if Kassler is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Kassler really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Bokov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Kassler's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Bokov wants to get back to full guard.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Kassler in particular looking to stall.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Carsten Brian Kassler has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Kassler shoots in and bounces Bokov off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.

The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Carsten Brian Kassler wasn't active enough on the ground.

Kassler throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Bokov was covering up waiting for the punch and Kassler finishes the takedown easily into guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Bokov shoots and misses

and Kassler counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Kassler.
Kassler slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Carsten Brian Kassler.

Kassler looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Kassler perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Kassler looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Bokov with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Carsten Brian Kassler was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Kassler bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Kassler is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Bokov's shoulder. That is not cool.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Carsten Brian Kassler hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Kassler darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carsten Brian Kassler showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Bokov doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Kassler counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Kassler takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Carsten Brian Kassler has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Kassler misses with the combination.
Kassler misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Kassler closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kassler lands in his opponent's guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Vanya Bokov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Kassler is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Kassler content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.

Kassler passes Bokov's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Kassler lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
Still in half guard, Kassler seems content to control.
Let's hope that Kassler has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Carsten Brian Kassler comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Kassler has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
