PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Rodney Barnes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Quinn Powers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barnes comes to the cage accompanied by Headstrong Trapt. Powers has chosen Send the Pain Below as his entrance music. Barnes is coming into this fight with a significant injury, which will no doubt have an effect on his cardio. There are an array of beautiful celebrities at ringside tonight! I wonder if any of them paid for their tickets.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rodney Barnes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Quinn Powers!
The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, Joseph Jones and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Powers circles away from the clinch attempt
and Powers counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Barnes is breathing heavily.
A head kick misses from Powers.
Powers will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Barnes shoots for a takedown but Powers saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Powers lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Barnes circles away quickly and effectively.

Powers shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
Powers controlling the pace for now.

That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Quinn Powers hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Barnes slaps away a takedown attempt from Powers, before circling back to the center of the mat.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Powers fails with a takedown attempt.
Rodney Barnes has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Quinn Powers.

Powers closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Still in half guard, Powers seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Powers's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Powers stands up from half guard.
Powers shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Barnes but Barnes pushes him off and we're back to square one.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Powers is defended easily by Barnes.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Powers.
Barnes closes the distance but Powers moves to the side

and Powers counters with a single leg into guard. Barnes didn't expect that.
Powers is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Powers won't allow Barnes to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Powers stands up and waves to Barnes to follow him.
Powers shoots and misses

and Barnes counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Powers's guard now.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Barnes is looking to stand up but Powers won't let him.

Barnes stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Barnes has taken the fight to the clinch.

Powers pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Barnes fails with the takedown.
Powers doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Barnes counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Quinn Powers dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Powers shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Barnes counters with a left and a right that stings Powers.
Powers is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Barnes.

Powers instigates a clinch.
Powers lands a glancing elbow in the clinch.
Powers jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Barnes walks away with a smile on his face. Powers gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Barnes misses with a takedown attempt

and Powers counters with a nice double leg into side control. Barnes won't be happy with that.
Powers is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Barnes prevents Powers from moving into mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Powers decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Quinn Powers seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Powers clinches up against the cage.

Powers turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Powers manages to end up in side control.
Barnes is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.
Powers wants to lay and pray for a moment but Barnes keeps working.
Powers taking a break here but Barnes is having none of it and regains half guard.

Powers works his way into full mount!
Barnes is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Powers lands a nice shot to the head.
Powers controlling the position easily from mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Barnes tries to hold on but Powers pushes him away.
Powers sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Let's hope that Powers has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Quinn Powers was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Powers fails to land with a series of punches.
Powers shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Barnes pinned against the cage. Barnes gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Quinn Powers showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Barnes is looking to stand up but Powers isn't so interested in that idea.

Powers wants to pass the guard but Barnes is keeping the position.
Powers is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Quinn Powers has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Powers shoots in looking for a takedown but Barnes manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Powers's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Powers tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Barnes swivels and escapes.

The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Barnes flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Barnes is trying to stand.
Powers controlling the pace.
Powers is trying to control the action in half guard but Barnes is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Powers fails with the takedown

and Barnes holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Powers tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Barnes just stands there and leans against the cage.

Barnes breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Powers changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Barnes tries to avoid it but Powers manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Barnes to the ground. Barnes escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Powers dives in and grabs Barnes's left leg, looking for a takedown. Barnes pushes down on Powers's head and hops out.
Barnes scores with a three punch combo!
Powers is trying hard to land a takedown here. Barnes sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Powers doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Barnes counters with a three punch combo that has Powers backing up. Powers nods at Barnes to acknowledge the strikes.
Barnes tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Powers paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Powers has taken the fight to the clinch.
Powers is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Barnes pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Powers tries to score a body lock takedown but Barnes shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Barnes gets underhooks to prevent Powers's takedown attempt.
Powers is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Good anti-grappling being displayed by Powers as Barnes tries to tie him up.
Powers has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Barnes avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Barnes prevents the takedown attempt.

Barnes jumps guard and drags Powers to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Barnes is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Powers is controlling him.
Rodney Barnes has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Barnes working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Powers doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Powers manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Quinn Powers comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Powers winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
