PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Michael Meatball (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kenji Nakamura (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Meatball kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Spider ain't no sunshine. Nakamura comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Amazing kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! This should be fireworks!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Michael Meatball!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kenji Nakamura!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Sosuke Kotani and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nakamura throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Meatball shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Nakamura but Nakamura pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Meatball has a takedown stuffed.
A solid body kick from Nakamura.
Meatball tries to bum rush Nakamura with a series of wild strikes but Nakamura uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Nakamura swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Meatball counters with a two punch combo.
Nakamura tries a head kick but it misses.

and Meatball counters with a takedown into side control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Meatball is trying to get an arm triangle but Nakamura is defending well.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Meatball tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Meatball stands up and beckons Nakamura to his feet.

Meatball closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Meatball misses with the ground and pound.
Nakamura is not content to let Meatball control the position.
Nakamura is looking to reverse the position.

Meatball tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Meatball has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Nakamura keeps Meatball under control for a moment.

Meatball wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Nakamura, who protects the arm well.

Meatball is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Nakamura has escaped the position, nice work there.

Meatball is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Nakamura is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Meatball goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Nakamura rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Meatball's guard! Nice work there by Nakamura!

Nakamura wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Meatball.

Nakamura is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

Meatball jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Nakamura is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Nakamura and Meatball has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Nakamura is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Nakamura is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Ouch! a nice leg kick from Nakamura, right into the meat.

Meatball has his foot on Nakamura's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Nakamura works his way back into a safe position though.

Meatball is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Michael Meatball overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Meatball wants to control from the top but Nakamura keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Meatball stands up and waves to Nakamura to follow him.
Meatball shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Nakamura sprawls well. Nakamura wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Meatball gets slowly back to his feet.
Nakamura throws a left and a right that both miss

and Meatball counters with a single leg into guard. Nakamura didn't expect that.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Meatball wants to control from the top but Nakamura keeps moving.

Meatball drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Meatball jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Meatball postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Nakamura is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Meatball, into his guard.

Meatball isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Nakamura stacks Meatball on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Nakamura!
Nakamura wants to lay and pray for a moment but Meatball keeps working.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Meatball wants to control but Nakamura postures up.
Meatball is looking to regain half guard here but Nakamura keeps moving and retains side control.
Nakamura is looking to take a break and control but Meatball is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Meatball is looking for a sweep.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Nakamura wants to pass to mount but Meatball is defending the position.

That's time! Meatball's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Meatball shoots in for a takedown but Nakamura shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Kenji Nakamura seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Nakamura doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Meatball scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Michael Meatball. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Meatball counters with a nice double leg into side control. Nakamura won't be happy with that.

Meatball thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Meatball creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Nakamura sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Meatball advances nicely into full mount.

Meatball is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Nakamura to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Nakamura shrugs it off.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Nakamura must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Meatball is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Nakamura would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Kenji Nakamura has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Meatball has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Nakamura got a little sloppy there for a moment and Meatball has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Nakamura has managed to get both his arms back between Meatball's legs - danger averted.

Meatball working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Nakamura doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Nakamura manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Meatball is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Nakamura frees his head nicely. Oh but Meatball has switched to an armbar! Nakamura is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
