PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Wayne Gilbert (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bon Billy (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bon Billy struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 206.3lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Bon Billy will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wayne Gilbert!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bon Billy!
The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Gregory Folan and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Gilbert looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Gilbert scores with a hook to the body. Billy takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Billy tries to bum rush Gilbert with a series of wild strikes but Gilbert uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Billy rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gilbert moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Gilbert scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.

Billy wants to get back to his feet.

Gilbert seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Gilbert slips a nice elbow through Billy's hands, connecting with Billy's forehead.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Billy is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Gilbert's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Billy jumps guard and drags Gilbert to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Gilbert slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Gilbert seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Billy for as long as he can get away with.

Gilbert has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Billy is looking to stand up but Gilbert isn't so interested in that idea.

Billy tries to score a body lock takedown but Gilbert shows good agility there to stay on his feet.

Billy gets caught flat footed, as Gilbert shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Gilbert is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Gilbert postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Billy escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gilbert gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Gilbert has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Billy is breathing heavily.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Billy can do anything to dispel that myth.

Gilbert lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Billy circles away quickly and effectively.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Gilbert, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
