The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Man shoots in and bounces Benetiz off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Benetiz is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Benetiz is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Man stops Benetiz from standing up. Man is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Benetiz is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Benetiz has escaped and now he's on top! Man looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Man being controlled here, momentarily. Benetiz must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Man escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Benetiz gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
That's one minute gone in the round. Benetiz wants to control from the top but Man keeps moving. Benetiz got a little sloppy there for a moment and Man has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Benetiz has managed to get both his arms back between Man's legs - danger averted. Benetiz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Man swivels though and keeps the full guard. Man isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Benetiz stacks Man on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Benetiz! A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Benetiz is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Man looks calm but he's in trouble here. Benetiz gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Man is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Benetiz lets go of the hold and Man can pop his arm back in it's socket.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:01 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Mario Benetiz!
