PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Alistair Yvel (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Hawk (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). On his way into the cage it seems that Alistair Yvel has been attacked by a crazed fan! It looks like it might have been the just bleed guy! Luckily Alistair Yvel seems to be OK! I thought that lunatic was in prison!?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Alistair Yvel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mike Hawk!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yukihiro Shimada and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yvel misses with a combination

so Hawk counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Hawk trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Yvel trying to control the position.
Yvel utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

Yvel looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hawk controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Hawk scoring with punches to the head and body.
Yvel is trying to control the position but Hawk postures up.

Hawk thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Yvel keeping full guard, as Hawk tries to pass.
Yvel wants to sweep but no luck.
Yvel trying to keep a closed guard but Hawk is proving a slippery customer.

Hawk is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Hawk tries to free his leg and advance position but Yvel is retaining full guard.

Yvel has momentary wrist control but Hawk slips an elbow through the middle.
Yvel is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Yvel is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Hawk is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Yvel can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Hawk controls the pace.
Hawk scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Hawk has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Yvel is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hawk's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hawk's back!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hawk's corner are yelling at him, telling him to just focus on controlling Yvel's hands.
Yvel is trying to stick to Hawk's back but Hawk is turning into Yvel. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Yvel's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Hawk.

Hawk slips nicely into half guard.
Hawk performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hawk is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Yvel is just riding it out for now. Hawk eventually gives up the hold.
Hawk is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Hawk is thwarting Yvel's attempts to control the position.

Hawk looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Yvel is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hawk's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hawk's back!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mike Hawk dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Yvel will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
A head kick misses from Hawk.
Hawk lands with a kick to the temple. Yvel shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like Alistair Yvel has been cut.
Yvel tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Hawk counters with a single leg into guard. Yvel didn't expect that.

Hawk thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Yvel working for a triangle but Hawk defends it easily.
Hawk chips away with some ground and pound.

Hawk drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Hawk jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Yvel looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Hawk has picked Yvel up and slammed him! Yvel can't keep hold of the triangle and Hawk manages to pass to side control!
Yvel is trying to control Hawk's posture but Hawk avoids it.
Hawk creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.
Hawk has control of an arm but Yvel manages to advance to Hawk's back!
Yvel has Hawk flattened out and is raining down punches.
Even with his hooks in, Yvel manages to miss with strikes from the back.
Hawk rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.

Hawk is refusing to be controlled, as Yvel sits in half guard.
Hawk wants to get back to full guard.
Hawk is not content to let Yvel control the position.
Yvel is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Hawk!

Hawk is trying desperately to improve position.

Yvel looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Hawk with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

That was a close second round but I would say that Alistair Yvel will probably get the nod.

Hawk stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Yvel swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Alistair Yvel.
Yvel moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

and Hawk decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Yvel's guard.

Hawk gets to his feet. Yvel looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Yvel throws a right and a left that Hawk avoids nicely.

Hawk scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Hawk lands a nice short elbow.
Yvel wants to improve his position but Hawk is controlling well.
Hawk passes into side control, despite Yvel's attempt to control the position.

Mike Hawk comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Hawk has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
